Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan has resigned from the captaincy and former skipper Mahela Jayawardene has been reappointed to the role, the island nation's sports minister said on Monday.

"Dilshan has sent his resignation letter so therefore the selectors met today and appointed Mahela Jayawardene as the captain and Angelo Mathews as the vice captain," Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage told Reuters.

Dilshan quit a day after returning from South Africa where Sri Lanka lost the three-match test series 2-1 and five-match one-day series 3-2.

Taking over from Kumar Sangakkara after a six-wicket defeat in the 2011 World Cup final against India, Dilshan led the team to England, South Africa and in a home series against Australia but failed to win a single test or one-day series.

Jayawardene captained the team for more than three years from 2006 before Sangakkara took over.

The stylish batsman, who led Sri Lanka to the 2007 World Cup runners-up spot, will be the captain for all three formats of the game. (Source: Reuters)

Well deserved - All the best Mahela in your very challenging role to revive our cricket team.

    Best of luck Mahela

Mahela did not perform well in most of his recent matches for reasons only known to him. He has to prove himself now.

MAHELAS CAPTANCY IS BETER THAN DILSHAN GOOD LUCK MAHELA

When one is forced upon the leadership, it would not simply work! Sri Lanka has to fast track grooming alternate youngster.

What we heard is that Mahela was forced to take over. Otherwise he will not have a place in the team with his
poor performance. At least, Dilshan did well in a few
matches where as Mahela did not perform at all.
Do not know whether he did it purposely.

i'm sorry but i just can't believe that mahela was forced into accepting the captaincy. i think he accepted it with both hands and thanked his lucky stars.

mahela has been a fantastic part of our team, but that's all in the past. i am grateful for what he has done, but it's time he resigned along with all the other long standing under-performers.

i am sure he could serve the cricket team well in a different capacity. but resign he must and do the honourable thing.

With all due respect, I think the one under Dialshan was the best SA tour we had. Agree Mahela is a better bet, but, it should come the rightway and not forced on to him.
