Mahanayakes write to MR over Kandy night races

A letter signed by four Maha Nayake Theras has been sent to the President Mahinda Rajapaksa requesting him to stop the Night Motor Races to be held in the Kandy during this weekend.The Asgiriya Chapter Maha Nayaka, Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddarakkitha Thera; the Malawatta Chapter Anu Nayaka, Ven. Niyangoda Wijithasiri Thera; the Sri Lanka Amarapura Chapter Mahanayaka the Ven. Davuldena Gnanissara Thera and the Sri Lanka Ramanna Nikaya Maha Nayaka the Ven. Napana Premasiri Thera were the signatories to this letter.
Meanwhile arrangements are being made to hold the controversial night races with sand bags placed at several points. Soldiers are seen filling bags with sand which had been unloaded at the vehicle park of the Bogambara racecourse. (Shane Seneviratne)

Why have people forgotten that some of the most iconic motor racing events took place is Kandy during the 90's? From racing around the Lake, to the infamous Hill Climbs and road rally's, the city of Kandy was a leader in Motor Racing. It seem's that only certain groups of people who haven't had their coffers piled have suddenly started to oppose these races. A motor race won't tarnish or damage the image of Kandy or a religion which currently has more serious concerns to address.
