Legalize Prostitution-Provincial Councillor

The Member of the Southern Provincial Council (UPFA) Ajith Prasanna has proposed to legalize prostitution to boost tourism in the country.

He made this proposal to the Ministry of Economic Development through the Southern Provincial Council.

He had said steps should be taken to bring down women from other countries if adequate people were not available in Sri Lanka.
He pointed out that more than 40,000 women were now engaged in the prostitution trade in Sri Lanka.

The Provincial Council member was of the view that his proposal was in keeping with the concept of Sea and Sunshine in S3 system for tourism.

He said that he felt the need to promote prostitution as a means to boost tourism during his recent visit abroad including Korea and Thailand. (D.G.Sugathapala)

Sadly tourism professionals don't see this as a need to promote Sri Lanka. we know Politicians will sell their own mothers and sisters to make a buck. All this time during worse periods even, tourism was promoted not by promoting prostitution. Shame on you provincial councilor

There are easy ways to earn money, but we need to find descent ways to earn money, for this we need ruling people to use their decency and brain. I am not surprised tomorrow if these politicos says, let’s legalize drugs, which can bring better traffic than prostitution. Ken Wednesday, 21 November 2012 07:32 AM

whether prostitution is illegal or not it is happening in Sri Lanka. whether you like it or not, its happening in large scale. because it is a social need. By legalizing, it can be regulated and controlled, for example the transmission of STD's can be reduced. Even though you might not know the health authorities of STD control are closely liasing with Brothels and Commercial sex workers & they've shown good results. So, before jumping into conclusions with your own perimetery, it is better to analyse the facts.

Modaya if you think money is everything then human life will become nothing.....Instead make some proposal to rehabilitate the 40,000 which you mentioned already in the trade. Ask them if they are doing it willingly and enjoying their daily moments..... Its poverty that is driving them in to such decadent acts remember.

Why Prostitution ?? Why not legalize Marijuana in the country. I hope that would boost up tourism in the country while you can hold your countries reputation, respectation and more even your so call culture. :P

    winind Wednesday, 21 November 2012 04:02 PM

    1. Alcohol is legal in SL. Still we have Kasippu. So how can we say prostitution will be totally monitored and standardized? We know how it works in this country so let's think logically please.

    2. In countries like thai where prostitution is legal, young girls from rural areas are forced into this by addicting them to drugs. So wont that happen here where kidnappings happen often and underworld operate freely?

Why do we need tourists who come here for prostitutes anyway?

    hkshewa Tuesday, 20 November 2012 01:57 PM

Sex is an essential human need.. As such there is nothing wrong with this proposal.

ya good deal. register them and open tax files for each. say each earns 10k per each service x 4 per day assuming they work only 4 hours a day.40kx20 = 800k a month. that works out to 432 billions revenue. imagine the tax revenue for the govt.

    manju Wednesday, 21 November 2012 04:06 AM

thailand and even holland suffer from human trafficking. soon sri lankan girls will be kidnapped from villages with the promis of employment and then be trapped in a brothel.

this idea is not that of the ministers. early part of this year one of the brothers proposed it along with the Casino city in the colombo harbour area. this ministers comment is just to prepare the public mindset for what has been decided ling while ago.

what we are now saying is that Sri Lankan tourist attraction is not working enough so we are throwing in prostitution to attract them.

along with this trade will come the child sex and rape sex. these will be hidden behind the legalized brothels.

The social cost of this decision is going to be very high.

    Hash Wednesday, 21 November 2012 04:06 AM

Is it for the tourist or for the ministers ?

    Doof Wednesday, 21 November 2012 04:06 AM

This is political suicide... or is it? Will he get all the male votes now in secret? Haha

Haha anyway, i do not think economic growth is a reason to legalise prostitution. It is somethign that must be doscouraged and not encouraged. However, from the perspective that it is the oldest profession, women do it anyway and as a result they do not gte protection under the law for crimes commited against them when offering their services, i think it should be legalised but NOT promoted or encouraged

    DisgustedObserver Wednesday, 21 November 2012 04:36 AM

The comments on this thread are worrying and testimony to the fact that we are breeding a community of sex-deprived beings. The fact that this was suggested as a means to promote tourism is both embarassing and representative of the irrational character of most government-led development projects in current times. Surely, Sri Lankan tourism should be promoted along other lines? To suggest that such a physically and culturally beautiful nation must resort to such measures is idiotic. Improve infrastructure throughout the country, think of innovative ways to promote tourism and expand on existing methods (eco-tourism etc) and improve transport facilities to increase accessibility throughout the country and then we can truly say there are no other options.
