A Sri Lankan delegation will head to Brussels next week for talks with the European Union (EU) on the GSP plus trade concession and other issues, Minister G.L Pieris told reporters today.

Those included in the delegation are Treasury Secretary Dr. P. B. Jayasundera, Foreign Secretary Romesh Jayasinghe, Justice Secretary Suhada Gamlath and Attorney General (AG) Mohan Peiris (PC).

The EU last month decided to withdraw GSP for Sri Lanka but has given Sri Lanka time to negotiate and attempt to retain the facility. (SAJ)

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 09:47 AM

After all the pompous talk by the local yokels of not bending to the West, we are now going with our tails tucked between the legs to bend to the West.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 04:04 PM

I thought that the government maintained the stance that GSP+ was unimportant? So, why go to EU now?

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 05:13 PM

So what happened to all that arrogant talk, by our politicians? Now they are 'running with their tails between their legs.' These politicians are the 'pits.'

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 05:30 PM

The biggest joke is that the man who threatened to take the EU to court, on this issue, is now issuing this statement about a government delegation going to EU. Doesn't this 'professor' have at least an iota of shame left?

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 06:22 PM

Say we are OK without GSP plus, then send a group to beg the EU? ... Very soon, Sri Lanka will become 'Chin Lanka'!

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:05 PM

Are they going to beg for 2/3rd's majority?

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 09:36 PM

Yes, sure! China and the other mentioned countries will 'import' our garments, when they can produce them at a lower cost. When will our people face the truth, instead of just 'shooting their mouths off.'

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 10:01 PM

Make sure you take the largest pot available, when you go there for begging.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 10:07 PM

Why are you not taking Mr. Pachayudaya with you? ... He will organize a demonstration in front of the EU head office in Brussels.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 10:14 PM

'Beggars can't be choosers' - proved once again.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:19 AM

What courtesey man? Promoting pro-LTTE cause just like our politicians with the objective of narrow electoral gains.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 06:58 AM

I thought (According to CB Governor) SL can survive without GSP+. So why all these trouble to go to EU.... Why they always try to fool the public?

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:04 AM

anything can be done through negotiations.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:06 AM

Why GL told that he will go to International courts.
All Sri Lankans are cheated by these Ministers.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:17 AM

hope that team is comprised of good diplomats and economists, who will not sell the country for money. sending big-mouth MP's will further deteriorate the chances of having it.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:26 AM

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:20 AM

Is this another 75 person deligation on First Class Mihin Air to eat up the tax payers money? Do the right thing by the people and you will not have to go to EU.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:20 AM

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:45 AM

No legal actions??????? I think G.L's adea is better than wasting of money for this trip.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:48 AM

WHY STILL NEGOTIATE, SHOW THEM S/L CAN DO WITHOUT GSP+. WE HAVE OUR FRIENDS IN IRAN, N. KOREA, LIBIYA, PAKISTAN, CHAINA, BURMA ETC TO SURVIVE WITHOUT BEGGING FOR GSP+. STAND FIRM.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 09:26 AM

We thought that the Govt does not need GSP any more and can count on MRs new friends to fill the gap. Government can eat its own words but the poor to suffer in the long run.
