There is a severe shortage of drugs needed for the veterinary care of livestock affected by the recent floods, particularly in the Eastern Province, officials said today.

According to the Department of Animal Production and Health, over 90,000 buffaloes and herds of cattle, 40,000 goats and poultry farms with over 200,000 birds were affected by the floods that hit the Central, North-Central  and Eastern Provinces during the first two weeks of January .

Director General of the Department Dr. A. D. Nimal Chandrasiri told Daily Mirror today the World’s Society for the Protection of Animals and MILCO had supplied certain quantities of drugs to treat the affected animals. (KB)
