Two individuals were arrested yesterday while they were accepting ransom money after they had threatened to kidnap a student in the Akuramboda area in Matale.
The suspects were arrested with a sum of Rs 20 million in the Golahenwatte area by the crimes division of the Matale police. However one suspect had fled the area.
According to police sources, the suspects had called the student’s parents and had threatened to kidnap the girl if they did not pay a sum of Rs 20 million.
The suspects possessed a pistol at the time of the arrest and the police also discovered a locally manufactured hand grenade left by the suspect who had fled. The suspects will be produced before the Matale magistrate court today.
The police also said that the suspects had tried to rob the student’s house previously but had failed when the girl’s mother had shouted for help. (Daily Mirror online)

The Law and Order seems to be getting worse in Sri Lanka! We should implement the death penalty for at least one year. At present criminals are so cocky because they know that they are immune from real punishment. If the new Minister of Prison Reforms wants to rename Death Row he can call it "Gateway to Heaven".

True enough. I have worked in countries that have death penalty. We go out sometimes (for short periods) without even locking our apartment doors because we know no one will rob us. But now we're settled in SL, and have to live in fear even when we are in the house. I'm glad this government is making some kind of progress in several areas - Please use the available army, police resources and send the thieves to heaven or hell or whatever out of this world.

Quite agree, in some gulf states, a lady could even walk in a street at midnight and be safe in doing so. Bring in capital punishment and we could see a decline in crime.

I think low and order was better when there was a white van. Now what kind of van is running the country? Sri Lanka is a good example to how to implement low and order.
