A group of six students of the Kelaniya university were taken into custody by the Fort Police today while they were engaged in a till collection campaign.
According to Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) Convener Sanjeewa Bandara the students had been engaged in the till collection campaign to collect funds for a talent show - 'Bihidora Abiyasa', which is scheduled to be held at the Jayawardenapura university.
Among the arrested group of students today were two student monks as well.
"The till collection campaign was carried out simultaneously in all parts of the country today by students from various universities. They took to the streets to collect money due to the lack of assistance for such activities by the university administration," he added. (Lakna Paranamanna)

So, what's the offence. One would have thought till-collection is a normal, harmless exercise especially for a good cause. Wonder under what law the students had been arrested.
