Two more suspects in the killing of a policeman and his wife in Kamburupitiya, drowned after jumping into the Denagama river, while they were trying to escape from the police custody in the early hours today, police said.

Police said the two suspects jumped into the river after they were taken to a hideout in search of weapons said to have been hidden by them.

Earlier one of the main suspects in the killing of a police constable and his wife was shot dead when caught in a cross fire at Massmulla, Kamburupitiya.

A Police constable and his wife were hacked to death last Saturday night in Kambrupitiya where their two-year-old son injured in the tragedy. (Pix by Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk)

Yes right punishment. Because, Law and order in this country have big holes. But right culprits are punished. This type of punishment gives big message to the society to avoid killing of people. So then there will be some kind of reduction of killings because they will know there will not be space for them to come to judiciary to pay and get released.

zacky een Wednesday, 27 November 2013 05:30 AM

That is the better way to get rid of killers without keeping them in jail and feeding them with public money.

piyal samarakone Wednesday, 27 November 2013 05:37 AM

probably the best way to punish the criminals without making lawyers pockets big and waste of public money. treat the same way for the other criminals pls -

    G.M. Jayawardena Wednesday, 27 November 2013 07:05 AM

With the information that we have now, We may feel that those who are responsible for the killing the police officer and his wife, lost their lives are justified but the real truth behind this crime may not come out and the mastermind also may still be at large.

    CP Wednesday, 27 November 2013 07:06 AM

This is a sad state of affairs. They should be prosecuted in courts. If country's punishment method needs a change let them be changed tough like Saudi. I cannot accept this. If they should be given capital punishment through a legal process is the better option.

    Lokka Wednesday, 27 November 2013 07:08 AM

Justice meted out to the criminals. This should be practised in other cases too.

Nadi Karunaratne Wednesday, 27 November 2013 07:08 AM

I think I have heard this story before.

Kingsley Wijesinhe Wednesday, 27 November 2013 07:16 AM

The people commenting here seem to have forgotten that there is such a thing as "due process." However heinous the crime may be, an accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond all reasonable doubt in a properly constituted court of law, after being given an opportunity to defend himself. Then only can the appropriate punishment be imposed, also by a court of law. Extra-judicial killings, whether by the police or anyone else, whatever the circumstances, have no place in a civilised country.

    Dingimahattaya Wednesday, 27 November 2013 05:25 AM

    Better kill all of them.

    srinath.gunaratne Wednesday, 27 November 2013 08:56 AM

Yeah, keep glorifying lawlessness, One day when it get you you can feel how it is, Nobody is above the law and this culture of suspect disappearance has created DIGs that do contract killing. Hope you are proud of that?

    pokirissa... Wednesday, 27 November 2013 09:29 AM

good...by the way what happened to the Mulleriyawa killers, where four people got shot and killed...?...I mean the Bharatha lakshman killers...

    peter Wednesday, 27 November 2013 09:51 AM

Could the police organize same fate for the Anuradhapura killer. No worry, no body would approach human rights protectors. After all you ( police ) have prevented possible future killings! Lawyers be aware - new way of justice in the making!

    Jayantha Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:05 AM

That might have done to cover the real culprits even if these were involved! Things may not be so as they seem!

MARK DAVIS Wednesday, 27 November 2013 11:02 AM

Why not the killers of the British tourist jumping into the river?

    Henrietta Wednesday, 27 November 2013 03:14 PM

These types of encounters are welcome provided Police finds real culprits instead of innocent scapegoats saves state funds and Court's time.

    asoka Wednesday, 27 November 2013 03:31 AM

very good...but the killers of Bharatha Lakshman are living freely...so only the killers whom were not influential get killed...

    Fayad Wednesday, 27 November 2013 03:33 AM

Same old story with a different turn.
Court should decide their fate we are setting a bad example
Two wrong won't make one right

    Chaminda Wednesday, 27 November 2013 03:39 AM

Criminals must be punished. But it has to be done in a lawfull manner. Please remember this jungle law can be applied to anyone they fancy even on innecont . So stop glorifying this type of slaughter people. Fight for justice not thuggery

    puresrilankan Wednesday, 27 November 2013 12:00 AM

funny how they tried to swim for their freedom. funnier that they escaped after being captured by our police. u'd think that they'll atleast hold on tight to the killers of their friends. via DM Android App

    Mahas Wednesday, 27 November 2013 12:00 AM

Quite convenient how they keep dying, right? Wrong! These have the markings of encounter killings. via DM Android App

    RanjithT Wednesday, 27 November 2013 03:47 AM

They are only suspects and are entitled to be presumed innocent until proven guilty at least that what we were told how justice system here worked. What happened with the suspects amounts to extra judicial killings. The story is too familiar. If there is anything called law and order in this country the police officers who accompanied them should be suspended before an inquiry and if found guilty(in the most unlikely case) should be charged for manslaughter. High hopes I have Ha Ha HAAAAA.

    npj Wednesday, 27 November 2013 03:55 AM

True but this also can be a coverup for the actual criminals as deads cannot give evidence.

    Victim Wednesday, 27 November 2013 04:16 AM

New style adopted by the Police Department, congratulations. Murderers beware, think thousand and one times before you commit something against personnel of the Police or three Forces or against their families.

    Rohan Wednesday, 27 November 2013 12:00 AM

Yes people should know if they touch the cops what will happen to them. No matter how many corrupted cops we got, they are the only saviors of the common people. Cop killers should not be spared. via DM Android App

    Raj Wednesday, 27 November 2013 04:33 AM

No "innocent till proven guilty"? How about the Tangalle Murder case? why this justice not been carried out?

    Gallian Wednesday, 27 November 2013 04:40 AM

We want this kind of killing while law is allowing culprits to flee

    Roshan Wednesday, 27 November 2013 04:42 AM

Why can't they do the same for the for the murder of the British national at Tangalle?

    Maha R Wednesday, 27 November 2013 04:43 AM

Cop killers get killed by water, earth will be a much better place without killers of unarmed citizens., less weight now.

    ram Wednesday, 27 November 2013 04:47 AM

no law in the country under military rule.

    jamalji Wednesday, 27 November 2013 05:05 AM

Civil society should not accept this. Suspects were murdered by policemen due to the gruesome killing of fellow policeman, weakness in our law and undue delay in hearing cases . Govt. should conduct an inquiry and strenghthen the judicial system.

    MATHU Wednesday, 27 November 2013 05:20 AM

These are not good News. The Police is taking the law in to their hand and passing judgment on their own. Sure the criminals should punish through proper judicial system and not by arbitrary highhanded action.
