The child who was thrown into the Kaluganga river by his mother and was in the Intensive Care Unit at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital has died according to the Hospital Director.

The four year old boy, Amila Sandaruwan Fernando, was thrown into the river, March 11, by his mother who said she could not afford to take care of him. Amila was rescued by a truck driver and had been fighting for his life at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital.

According to investigators, the child’s father had left the family and the mother made her living by selling lottery tickets.

    Saturday, 20 March 2010 03:40 PM

What a sad episode. Authorities must take the blame for not admitting this child to a child care centre. In Sri Lanka the gap between the poor and rich is widening. This is a result of such an imbalance. We all thought after wining the war government will do something for the country. Sadly the president is putting all its effort to be in power for his benefit as well as that of his sons and relations.

    Saturday, 20 March 2010 08:18 AM

What a country is Sri Lanka. Rulers are enjoying all perks - high salaries, housing allowances, fuel allowances, duty free vehicles, foreign trips - all utilizing government funds. A poor mother has nothing to feed her 4 year old; she has no option than throwing him to a river. This is also when most of the political candidates throwing millions on posters and cutouts. Politians have deceived the people and they continue to do so.

    Saturday, 20 March 2010 08:26 AM

May you be born to kind and loving parents in a better country.

    Saturday, 20 March 2010 08:28 AM

This has nothing to do with human rights groups. The mother acted out of desperation and the poor child was the victim. There were much better ways to handle this, but apparently she is not educated enough. Now she would have murdered her child and live out the rest of her life in prison.

    Saturday, 20 March 2010 08:29 AM

May You Never face such a cruel karma in your next births Son.
    Putha "OBATA NIRWANA SUWA LABEWA"

    Saturday, 20 March 2010 09:59 AM

This may be due to poverty. Rulers have to find ways to improve the living standard of people. Also, religious leaders must encourage the people to live according to their faiths.
