A Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated trade union today urged the government to grant a 40 per cent salary increase so as to cushion the burden on an already suffering people from the fall out of the unprecedented increase in fuel prices.

Inter Company Employees Union (ICEU) President Wasantha Samarasinghe said the unions would take to the streets soon to compel the government to grant relief to the people burdened by the soaring cost of living. “Several unions will join hands on February 23 to protest the increase in the fuel prices and to urge the government to grant a meaningful salary increase,” he said.

The ICEU has been consistently demanding to know why the fuel prices were raised by such a margin and why the government is doing little or nothing to soften the impact on the cost of living. (Tharushan Fernando)

Will the private sector do that esp. small ones? The crunch is on both the sides, already debt ridden feel the pinch, survival may be crucial, lot of them would simply collapse!

Hahaha time to cut down bloated public sector and JVP will learn a lesson,,, JVP economic policies good for world war era,, perhaps not even that,,, I presume if the public sector cut down to around 750,000 ,, 40% can be achievable

Wow 40%! Then price is the cost of living going high. Keep the prices down for all commodities by encouraging higher productions! People have no time to increase the production because they spend time on protests!

Unions make the government fall and at the same time they also make the people lives more miserable because in crease in pay would lead to high prices!

All what the get would be gun shots and tear gas. The pro-government "patriotic" union members seem to be happy with the price increases!
