The JVP crisis has now made it impossible to publish its news paper ‘Lanka’ and had forced the management of it to launch a new journal named ‘Janarala’ from next Sunday.
'Lanka' Editor Chandana Sirimalwatte told a news conference today that legal impediments have prevented them from publishing ‘Lanka’. He said 'Janarala' would also take the same line as 'Lanka'. “We will become a voice for the voiceless just like 'Lanka',” he said.
However he said they have not given up the struggle for the ownership of 'Lanka'. Responding to a question raised by the journalists as to what would become of 'Janarala' newspaper in the event they managed to secure ownership of 'Lanka' newspaper Mr. Sirimalwatte said the service they provide to the society would continue whatever journal they publish.
He also pointed out that 'Lanka' newspaper was never the official news paper of the JVP and the party had no stake in the organisation which published it.
Mr. Similalwatte said most of the editorial staff that was in 'Lanka' had been absorbed to the new paper.
'Lanka' Managing Director Venura Herath said there was a conspiracy by a certain group to prevent the publication of 'Lanka' in the recent past. He said the group comprises persons who stood for pres freedom until recently. Therefore Mr. Herath said this group never allowed the 'Lanka' editorial to work independently.
Herath who was in custody was released on bail yesterday said his arrest was also a party of this conspiracy. He said he was assaulted by this interested group. (Yohan Perera)
