The JVP called on the public to come forward and stand against the suppression of student rights by the government and protect the free education of the country.

Releasing a media statement the JVP alleged that the government was suppressing those with opposing views and that 28 students were already behind bars while more than 200 had their classes suspended in Universities island wide.

The JVP demanded that all students who were arrested be released immediately including the Convener of the Inter University Students Federation, Udul Premaratne who the JVP allege was educating the public and leaders, of the suppression that is taking place against students and the free education system. Well it stopped UNP from dividing the country inline with LTTE wish. That's why only UNP and LTTE blamed JVP at that time.

Percy, If you look back when JVP was supporting MR, there were no troubles in the universities and no strikes in public sector. Got the picture, who is behiend those things now.

sinha ranasinha Saturday, 30 October 2010 06:21 PM

Who will listen to you ? Except jobless, pandit and lazy JVP idots.

    Ranjith Saturday, 30 October 2010 07:05 PM

You said correct. Hanging may be last, but atleast keep these mentally disables guys away from the development for about five years.

    Z Fernando Saturday, 30 October 2010 07:14 PM

Government can look after the education without the opinion from JVP.

ampara son Saturday, 30 October 2010 07:32 PM

You are right Nadarajah JVP is trying to hijack the student movement, as always.

    Jacob Sunday, 31 October 2010 12:29 AM

What people must do is to eradicate them one by one, just like they destroyed Dengu Mosquitoes...!

    Jason Sunday, 31 October 2010 01:04 AM

The only people suppressing student rights is the JVP. Remembering the 70's and 80's, never allow the JVP to misguide our students again. Sri Lanka would be a better place without you losers!

    iddasiri Sunday, 31 October 2010 01:28 AM

JVP is equally responsible for the missery of this society like LTTE and corrupt politicians.

    mnsmart Sunday, 31 October 2010 02:03 AM

we still remember how the JVP used the school children to destroy public property during 88/89. don't grab students to politics. let them study....

    weerasuriya Sunday, 31 October 2010 03:04 AM

If JVP contes for next election we can see how is the public support. Any country there are problem and if there is no problem means that country and people are not moving so that every where will create different activities/.program /problems etc. There are problem in the uni's but those problem can not solved with violent and thuggery. People are criticizing those actions. I think JVP is no more with public now. Now people are not take any supporting action towards JVP.

    Dinesh Sunday, 31 October 2010 03:08 AM

This statement shows that JVP is actively involved in university strikes

    dutugamunu Sunday, 31 October 2010 05:05 AM

My dear Jvp .. Pls read all the coments very carefully ... PUBLIC SUPPORT... you must be joking !!!

    Ziraan Sunday, 31 October 2010 06:29 AM

    Hi JVPers!!!

Yes, we all public hands with Gvt and students to supress you JVP from the Uni and Mother land Srilanka!!

    Ranga Sunday, 31 October 2010 10:54 AM

JVP should ask public support to hang themselves.

    Select Sunday, 31 October 2010 03:55 PM

Do you think poor parents can afford to pay the students fee of private universities?

    Nandana Monday, 01 November 2010 02:24 AM

However we have a problem infront of us,
government is on its way to open the private universities. Most of the parties involved in supporting the struggle, including JVP are not
against private uni's as a policy, but what they are stressing is government do not have any policy to retain the university staff in government uni'
    s. Neither the government, nor the pundits in forums like this do not address the core issue. Instead, wagging cheap sloggans against the students.

    unl Monday, 01 November 2010 03:03 AM

"public support" Thats My JVP Friends one thing you don't have.

    patriot Saturday, 30 October 2010 01:47 PM

ammu jeppa Saturday, 30 October 2010 12:21 PM

i think all IUSF buggers and all JVPers should be hanged !!!

    Man B Saturday, 30 October 2010 12:22 PM

Students are having there own power. JVP! Please don't motivate them in a political manner.

gALA PITA mADA Saturday, 30 October 2010 12:32 PM

if JVP got public support there would have been more members in Parliament. They don t have it anymore Sorry fellows you have to find another job

NADARAJAH SETHURUPAN Saturday, 30 October 2010 12:35 PM

As always, JVP is making ground work for another blood bath.

NADARAJAH SETHURUPAN Saturday, 30 October 2010 12:36 PM

JVP is the other side of the coin of LTTE.

Ruwan Ferdinandez Saturday, 30 October 2010 12:42 PM

JVP's interpretation of 'Free Education' is totally different to what Dr.Kannangara proposed. JVP's interpretion includes ignoring classes and education, misguiding poor students, destroying their future and disrupting the public by holding demonstrations daily.

    suchith Saturday, 30 October 2010 12:45 PM

The JVP's been fooling the student movements for a long time...hopefully soon those days will be over and we'll have a new age student movement built up.

The country should selebrate the day the IUSF falls !

Nelun de Silva Saturday, 30 October 2010 12:50 PM

As a university academic, I applaud the firm stance taken by the government in arresting the student leaders responsible for the chaotic situation in the universities. We are all aware that this situation is the sole responsibiltity of a few misguided youths, fuelled by a political party. The majority of the undergraduates are not interested in political nitpicking but want to get on with their studies and graduate. At least now they will have the courage to speak out against the hardliners due to the stern but necessary actions taken by the government.
I am disgusted that Karu Jayasuriya and the UNP is trying to get political mileage out of this situation by siding with the alleged miscreants just to be anti government. Why cant the oppostion political parties acknowledge when constructive things happen for the good of the country, rather than foolishly oppose every action taken by the government ?

Percy Mandawala Saturday, 30 October 2010 12:52 PM

JVP was very good when they supported MR to come to power in 2005.Nobody criticized them except UNP at that time.

    Rajitha Saturday, 30 October 2010 12:56 PM

    Public support??
    maybe in your Dreams.

    Yeti Saturday, 30 October 2010 12:59 PM

Since when did they ever seek public support?

    Ruwanthi Saturday, 30 October 2010 01:01 PM

Yes hang all IUSF,JVP and UNP..and anybody in the opositions ..then Rajapaksa family can rule the country for years to come.good stratergy to develop the country.

    shameer Saturday, 30 October 2010 01:19 PM

now JVP must accept, Udul is a representative of JVP & get the people's support.... if not, poor Udul & others will sacrifice their degrees, careers & lives due to political jokes !!!!

local boy Saturday, 30 October 2010 12:17 PM

    lol

    ruwan Saturday, 30 October 2010 01:49 PM

We got independance 62 years ago stiil we are going down to worse JVP,LTTE are part of our failed politisians who ruled the country dont be immotional be intelegent....

    garawi Saturday, 30 October 2010 01:53 PM

Sure, the MR period is far better than the JVP Bheeshana period.

    garawi Saturday, 30 October 2010 01:53 PM

    Quite right!

    garawi Saturday, 30 October 2010 01:56 PM

Yes! I too thought that Karu was a sensible person simply for the support he gave MR to suppress the LTTE even though he had to go against the UNP leadership. But alas this is a grave mistake to support the JVP student faction to instigate disorder in schools. Shame on you Karu!

    Neomal Saturday, 30 October 2010 01:56 PM

The public must come forward to help the Govt to stop this uni protests because this almighty Govt has failed to do it by themselves.

    garawi Saturday, 30 October 2010 01:57 PM

Perccy! As long as they are constructive they can be accomodated. But now they have gone hack to 1988 period of Bheeshanaya and leading the students in the wrong direction. Can you accept that??

    hemj Saturday, 30 October 2010 01:58 PM

How many poor students have sacrificed their life, future of them, dreams of poor parents and family members.
Still looking at things as ling gembos. Let the university students to become competitive gradutes as same in other countries. Are there struggeles in India, our very neighbour?

    Dr.No Saturday, 30 October 2010 01:59 PM

I totally agree. They were the darlings of the "so called patriots". Now they are bad and ugly.

    polkiccha Saturday, 30 October 2010 02:13 PM

hey do u seriously think the presence of jeppas and IUSF will make the country a better place. ha ha ha

    MTNB Saturday, 30 October 2010 02:15 PM

Shameer, what degree for him, Premaratne’s university studentship had been abolished in July 2008 after he was unsuccessful in dental examinations.

    seruvlla Saturday, 30 October 2010 02:18 PM

As soon as possible we have to open private university. then j vp cannot pool student. but have to ban bogus education institute.now day srilanka has that.

    mike Saturday, 30 October 2010 02:38 PM

What public support?Do you want the other students to follow the same path,as the ones in the custody?

    I Hussein Saturday, 30 October 2010 02:54 PM

So you applaud the govt even when students get killed and harassed. Are you suggesting UNP & JVP to support the govt? You must be kiddign mate.
