A jay walker who crossed the road away from a pedestrian crossing was fined Rs.100 by the Colombo Traffic Court Magistrate today.
The jay walker Mohamed Ansar Mohamed Musthafa was produced before the Colombo Traffic Court Magistrate Jeyaram Trotsky by the Metropolitan Traffic Police and submitted that the accused was arrested while going across the road without using the pedestrian crossing.
The police said they are conducting classes for those who violate the pedestrian crossing law to educate them on the road rules. Yet the accused when asked to come for the classes on Sunday had ignored it and did not attend the class.
The police said it is an offence to cross the road within 50 metres from a pedestrian crossing without using it. The Magistrate fined the accused Rs.100 and warned him to abide by the road rules. (T. Farook Thajudeen)

u hv a point but they are imposing this for the betterment of the pedestrians them self. I think its not the 100 rupees but the hassle. discipline has to come from all sides

I think Rs100 is a reasonable fine initially as for Sri Lanka this is an early step in this law but surely as time goes on the fine should be increased. MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT A HEAVY FINE BE IMPOSED ON MOTORISTS WHO DO NOT STOP AT ZEBRA CROSSINGS WHEN THERE IS A PEDESTRIAN TO CROSS.

I have noticed, bus stands and buses being parked on pedestrian crossings. What has the authorities to say about this? This is against traffic rules. People find difficult to get to the other side of the road when these buses are parked on pedestrian lines.

what about the vehicles who do not stop at pedestrian crossings? When are they getting classes? especially the luxury cars all "tinted" the Private buses and the 3 wheelers?

u dont need a lawyer BUT the magistrates hand over a bigger fine IF u dont have a lawyer to represent u....... They want the profession to be passed down the generation.... Most western countries u can self represent.... in minor cases and IF u are competent with the law u can self represent in major cases as well.....

good move indeed, but Rs.100/- and your name on papers, a very mean deal, how much he paid for his lawyer? I think this should happen all over Colombo.

This meager fine is a contempt of the court and the people who enacted the rule. Why it is just Rs. 100. It should have been Rs. 1000.

100 Rupees fine? I am sure the man will do the same thing again. Fines must be a deterrent and not symbolic or a joke.
