A A A

Four hundred and four out of more than 15,000 Muslim families driven away from the Jaffna Muslim Ward by the LTTE in 1990 have resettled in their original places.

The Northern Provincial Council has allocated 6 million rupees for the development of the Market in the Muslim Ward and another 6.5 million rupees for the revamping of the Northern Muslim’s education centre, the Uzmaniyya College.

Although there are 7 mosques in the in the area only four have been repaired in a manner the prayers could be conducted. Three out of four schools in the area have been revamped into a usable condition.

Although 76,000 Muslims lived in the area before the LTTE evicted the Muslims from the Northern Province twenty years ago, it is learnt that only fifty percent of the evicted Muslims prefer to live back in their former hometown as the others have firmly established their businesses in other parts of the country.

Good to hear. Let's see how far it's implemented.

Good thinking, the same thing which resulted in the great ethnic war....!

Seems you are another hurt monger hidden behind the Muslim name

    Only 0.5% . What a joke!!

    lankaman Monday, 27 December 2010 11:14 AM

It's about time. If the tamils have learnt any lesson from the 30 yr war, they should let the evicted Muslims come back to their original dwellings and livelihoods.

    Ranil Monday, 27 December 2010 11:13 AM

How about the resettlement of helpless Sinhghalees?

    Tin Monday, 27 December 2010 11:13 AM

Good. And it's necessary to make sure that any citizen - disregarding their ethnicity - can live in any part of the country.

Go to Saudi Arabia and you will be able to sing in Arabic, brother

Double Edge Monday, 27 December 2010 12:44 PM

People who can't move must nominate their relatives to go instead..

    Hasitha Monday, 27 December 2010 12:59 PM

Don't you understand that it cannot be done overnight? It takes time and should be done step by step.

    Shakeel Monday, 27 December 2010 01:04 PM

Its a good move. The allotted money for the development of the market and the College is useful to a certain extent but would require more in the future. How about the money that was taken away from them and also from their homes i.e.fixed and movable assets forcibly by the LTTE and also the ransacking by the inhabitants Have they been accounted for.

I am sure its difficult to put a figure but those millions would be worth billions now. You need a draw master plan and redevelop the area with proper infrastructure rather than hearsay.

I trust this government will do more than any other to resettle and also provide the means by which the Jaffna Muslims can contribute to the nation and their livelihoods.

Why not Sinhalese? Sinhalese must be majority evrywhere otherwise problems will arise someday....

Anwar Ismail Monday, 27 December 2010 03:35 PM

Thanks a lot for helping us to resettle here and now we like to know if we are allowed to sing national anthem in arabic?

    citizen1 Monday, 27 December 2010 06:23 PM

However small a number, you have to agree that it is better than the alternative (nothing).

    Dr.Rajeev Patnaik Monday, 27 December 2010 11:29 PM

There should be a little change in your view.General Tamils were not involved in this crisis. It was done by the LTTE.So avoid calling the therm Tamils which implies to decent Tamils also.

    firoz Tuesday, 28 December 2010 01:20 AM

It is at least a start. Please stop being so negative and appreciate this ! In some African countries , even this is far fetched. As a Muslim we have to see this in positive light.
