A A A

Jaffna Peninsula was connected to national grid after twenty five years by President Mahinda Rajapaksa by energizing Kilinochchi grid sub station this morning.

The connection follows a promise Power and Energy minister Patali Champika Ranawaka made to people in Jaffna last year that the connection would be made before the end of 2012. The Kilinochchi Grid Station was built at an estimated cost of Rs.3,200 million.

The LTTE destroyed transmission lines to North in the late 1980s immediately after the arrival of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF).

Then was he sitting on his degree when he signed for the derelict Chinese Coal Power Station?

kapa ta pissu Tuesday, 25 September 2012 09:53 AM

Now what happens is that due to heavy load, the voltage drops and all electrical appliances will get effected. This is similar to low quality diesel n petrol. You have to maintain a certain voltage to run these appliances. Unless they produce enough electricity to supply in to whole grid..Don't think so...

if you want to give credit to Champika for this, then the blame for Norocholai should also go to him

    bandara Tuesday, 25 September 2012 09:50 AM

why give credit to JHU , it is the govt. in power. Besides give credit to who ever funded it not just to the guy who cuts the ribbon

    bandara Tuesday, 25 September 2012 09:48 AM

You're assuming most of these idiots live in this country. Its apparent from most of the comments that a large number of the commentators are living abroad.

    Fusion Tuesday, 25 September 2012 06:46 AM

    Great news!

Nuzrath Anver Tuesday, 25 September 2012 06:39 AM

Connecting North to national grid is not a big issue. Where is the power generation capacity ? Why is it not going up ? More people are connected means more demand. If something goes wrong in one part means affects all of us. It is not to connect remote villages to national grid since the demand will increase not supply. The cost of connecting remote places would be huge compared to generating power in the villages.Getting every one to national grid will only increase demand not supply.

wasanthi, to be fair I think its the politicians who hinder the country's progress not the comments of the public. Anyway Jaffna people always complain they are not treated equally, and now they will be.
