Counsel appearing on behalf of former DIG Vaas Gunawardena informed Mahara Magistrate today that ‘a senior Police officer’ had led a conspiracy due to which his client is currently in custody.

“It was a conspiracy of a senior most Police officer, which resulted in him (Vaas Gunawardena) being remanded for a crime he did not commit” Counsel Anura Senevirathne told court.

The Attorney made this submission when the complaint regarding the alleged acceptance of a bribe by Mr. Gunawardena from ‘Singapore Sarath’ and accused in the murder of Kelaniya PS member Hasitha Madawala was taken up before court.

The Counsel further pointed out that criminals who were arrested by the former DIG were also a part of the conspiracy behind the arrest of Gunawardena.

He further urged an independent commission be appointed to investigate into the alleged crimes committed by the former DIG.

The counsel further told court that his client wishes to make a special statement in writing to the Mahara Magistrate and therefore requested a date for the submission.

Mahara Magistrate Darshika Wimalasiri ordered prison officials to make arrangements for the former DIG to make a written statement.

The suspects were further remanded till September 2. (By Dasun Rajapaksha & Ganidu Rochana Samaratunga)
