At a news conference soon after parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara ended his media briefing the UNP said he crossed over to the government to further his personal agenda and not because of differences with the party leadership.

“This was a deal, various people cross over for various reasons; some have crossed over for financial gain or when faced with criminal cases or other offences. This is also one such crossover,” UNP MP Ajith P. Perera said.

MPs Harin Fernando, Ajith P. Perera, Ruwan Wijewardene and Ranjan Ramanayake, who attended the news conference, said Mr. Jayasekara had betrayed the people, the party and his conscience.

“He is my good friend and till yesterday he told us that he will never leave the UNP, he has betrayed us all. His rationale for joining the government is also contradictory. How can this man who vehemently opposed this dictatorial regime, suddenly embrace the policies that promote nepotism,” Mr. Perera asked.

Actor turned politician Ranjan Ramanayake said there was no better actor in this country than Jayasekara.

“He has fooled us all and he is the best actor in this country for doing this for such a long time. He continued to fool people even at the end saying he wouldn’t leave the UNP and then suddenly turned around. We all know he is a talented man, but his talent doesn’t compensate for his lack of conscience or integrity,” he said.

In a scathing attack on his “friend”, MP Harin Fernando insisted that the calibre of the politician in Mr. Jayasekara was personified during his speech and subsequent interview.

“The remarks he made in parliament and thereafter speaks volumes of the kind of person he is. I’m disappointed and I am frustrated of politics as a whole due to this episode.

“He promised me last evening that he wouldn’t leave and he betrayed us all. What kind of a person is this man? Does he not have an iota of conscience to stick to his word,” a visibly disappointed Mr. Fernando asked. (By Hafeel Farisz and Chaturanga Pradeep)

    Dear sirs,

Use your brains and this is the time to take strong action against your unpopular leader. otherwise more will do the same. or you may also have to do the same.So be careful in what you say, if you are not taking right actions.

    Dammika Wednesday, 24 July 2013 03:12 PM

    Absolutely correct

    Attention Thursday, 25 July 2013 10:58 AM

Dayasiri don't try to build RAJA PAULA.Pl.Build your self as true person.

    Manoj Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:46 PM

We like to see Ranil Talking to the press to dispute Dayasiri's charges. Sri Lanka will be a much better place without this Pin Padi white elephant Parliament.

    Manoj Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:50 PM

I think Dayasiri has to come in front of People and reveal what really made him leave UNP.

All these chaps cross over to serve the masses but end up serving the master and themselves.

    YES, SURE!

    yehiya Thursday, 25 July 2013 11:27 AM

    Ranil also under deal.

No Man Thursday, 25 July 2013 04:04 PM

That is what we say not to trust any man,. Not only Dayasiri but every leader and every man. The Bible tells us "Cease ye from man whose breath is in his nostrils, for wherein is he to be accounted of?" (Isaiah 2:22).

    Hoodwinked Thursday, 25 July 2013 11:31 AM

DEAL OR NO DEAL he is right, no sensible person can remain in the opposition until the cows come home wagging their tails.

Andrew Pitugala Wednesday, 24 July 2013 08:52 PM

Politics in any Country has never been as low as this!!!!.

    chandike Thursday, 25 July 2013 11:31 AM

It is obvious there must be a deal either for financial benefit or some personnel issue!. But a question arises the courage an Hon MP to cross over and contest from another party. So this is clear the mentality of a political how they think of voters. We have to decide these people are true gentlemen or not with our VOTE. BUT THIS IS NOT HAPPENING IN SL. WE make comment on web and not using our brain properly and send these people home.

    thinkaboutit Thursday, 25 July 2013 04:19 PM

We the Sri Lankan voters are bl..dy fools. We seem to be always fooled by these rascals who promise something at election time and then do something else after that for personal gain. Getting elected seems to be only for the candidate's own future and not ours. We are all bl..dy fools.

Sujith Bandara Wednesday, 24 July 2013 03:42 PM

Grapes seem to be very sour

    Ryan Thursday, 25 July 2013 04:25 PM

Raja pawla is Ranil and clan. Dayasiri went against that and joined the common man's government. Ranil is the most corrupt and inhuman politician in the entire world.

    curious Wednesday, 24 July 2013 03:45 PM

Does it really matter who cross over to what . All the same.

    ind Thursday, 25 July 2013 11:39 AM

When people join opposition, there's no plan or underhand deal ? it's only applicable for otherwise !

Erantha Perera Thursday, 25 July 2013 04:25 PM

Machan Harin, Can't we get Ranil cross over and be Mahinda's Priminister or a minister. Edata thamai Vipaksheta Pana enne.

    Cedric Thursday, 25 July 2013 04:32 PM

When capable people are marginalized by the selfish leader Ranil to pursue his own agenda only the yes men will remain in the party. You clowns are trumpeting dreaming that Ranil someday will be the president. Dream dream hataradenama modayo. The grand old party is being taken to the grave by Ponnasamy. We are sad to lose u from our fold Dayasiri but we r ready to forgive u b'coz we know u tried hard to put sense into the selfish leader & his cronis but failed. A talented politician doesn't want to be in the opposition with Ranil he would hav til Ranil is kicked out or dies. He wil come bk with a change & wevwill take him bk like the prodigal son. Good luck DJ.

    Aba Wednesday, 24 July 2013 03:47 PM

Everybody knew why he concealed the cross over till the last minute. Why can't these politicians foresee?

    Lakputhra Wednesday, 24 July 2013 03:53 PM

Feel sad for genuine politicians in our nation. They will want to give up..Ranil s selfishness is the downfall of UNP! No wonder he is loser.

    ANTON Wednesday, 24 July 2013 03:55 PM

NOW THE SINGER LEFT, OTHERS ARE BAILA CHAMPIONS.

    Gayan Wednesday, 24 July 2013 03:58 PM

So what they mean is its only a matter of time they too will join the Govt.

    Mutu Thursday, 25 July 2013 12:47 AM

It is an act of betrayal all right, however judging by what is happening in the UNP, its leadership too should take the blame.

Mohamed Hussein Wednesday, 24 July 2013 04:07 PM

    Upul Wednesday, 24 July 2013 04:35 PM

    Matured discussion any way.

    Shane Wednesday, 24 July 2013 04:37 PM

If only ranil crosses over...all the peoples problems will be solved nah?!

    Amila. G Thursday, 25 July 2013 12:45 PM

Ranil s deal is to eliminate and destroy the UNP while holding on to the leadership.

    mama Thursday, 25 July 2013 09:21 AM

Sri Lanka can change only if Ranil becomes president... all others are selfish time passes (unfortunately people's rights are stollen )

Ane Anichchan Thursday, 25 July 2013 12:52 PM

Whether it's a deal or not the damage has already been inflicted! Now it is like to "lock the stable door after horse has bolted".

    Jagath Thursday, 25 July 2013 09:36 AM

Ranil also clinging on to the leadership for personal gains. He also has an agenda to be the leader for ever.

Kalu banda Thursday, 25 July 2013 10:17 AM

Another achievement of the Great Rani !

Citizen Ranaviru Thursday, 25 July 2013 10:18 AM

Dayasiri from the frying pan to the fire!

    Ampattan Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:18 PM

I don't like Ranil that doesn't mean what Dayasiri has done is correct. He wants to make money and he knew very well that joining hands with Mahinda will improve his cash flow. Our politicians are so disgraceful.
