The Health Ministry has initiated an investigation to identify the person or persons who allegedly sold a stock of expensive A H1N1 vaccines to a leading private hospital in Colombo after it was detected that the hospital in question was charging a ‘nurse’s fee of Rs. 100 for a single jab of A H1N1 vaccination.

The vaccine has a production cost exceeding US$ 100 or nearly Rs. 12000, a Ministry spokesman said

The spokesman said it was revealed that the A H1N1 vaccine detected at the private hospital was a part of the 1.5 million vaccines donated to Sri Lanka by the World Health Organization for A H1N1 control.

“The quoted value of one vaccine of A H1N1 is 100 dollars and they are available only at the state hospitals and Medical Supplies Division. These private suppliers do not import this vaccine. Therefore, the Ministry is keen to know how they ended up at the private nursing home,” the spokesman said.

He said the person who apparently not aware of the cost of the vaccine has sold them cheaply and that is why the private hospital charges only a ‘Nurse’s charge of Rs. 100 for one vaccination,” he said.

He aid that this is a criminal act as the Health Ministry is struggling to control fast spreading A H1N1 influenza before it goes out of control.

The Government Epidemiology Unit (GEU) has recommended that it was compulsory for expectant mothers, health workers and patients with chronic diseases to get the A H1N1 vaccination immediately.

According to the latest available data of the GEU there were 371 reported cases of A H1N1 influenza and 22 related deaths. (SAJ)

It would have been "criminal" for the private hospital to sell the drug if they got it free but they were not doing that. Is it a crime to get the vaccine because its a private hospital that gives it???? Do you think that people who go to private hospitals are not Sri Lankans???? Since I do not have time to spend hours at a Government hospital, I called several private hospitals to see if they have the vaccine (for my baby). None of them did. If I had known this private hospital had it, i would have gone and got it for my baby.... ... .. . . and I would have paid for it... We fret over nothing while everyone is silent on the real issues.

I partly agree with SCW. What's more important is to get these vaccinations out to the public. It's a joke, making it only available at government hospitals. What health ministry should have done is, giving quotas of the vaccination to the PVT hospitals and let them decide whether to charge for it or give it free. If the private hospital decide to charge a price, those who are willing can pay the price and get the vaccination. Others can always get it free from government hospitals.

Fact that health ministry didn't take this measures beforehand, opened an opportunity for these thieves to steel the stocks of vacination and sell it under-arm.

Without ministries authorized people how can stock delivered to private hospital. Still Ragama General Hospital and Colombo General Hospital not vaccinate for civilians even MOH places of some areas. Still they doing it for hospital staff and pregnant woman. Might be through these places stock going to private hospital by underhand. Fortunately some hospital and MOH in some provinces do vaccine to civilians. On one way private hospital do good job to cure civilians by this virus. The people who willing to pay for it and get vaccinate through private hospital let them to get it rather than getting useless answers from government hospital staff.
This is small good example how the government planning to become a “world wonderful country “ in future.
