The Indo-Lanka civil nuclear agreement would not permit India to dump its radioactive waste in Sri Lankan territory, Minister of Power and Energy Champika Ranawaka said.

"Management of radioactive waste does not authorise India to unload radioactive waste produced in Indian Nuclear Power Plants in Sri Lankan territory,” Minister of Power and Energy Champika Ranawaka said.

The Minister was commenting on the bilateral agreement signed on February 16 in New Delhi on cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. He said the agreement focussed on peaceful uses of nuclear energy in line with multilateral conventions entered by both India and Sri Lanka. The agreement will facilitate cooperation in the transfer and exchange of knowledge, expertise, sharing of resources, capacity-building and training of personnel in peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Ranawaka said Sri Lanka hopes to sign an MoU with Pakistan on the development of nuclear applications. A similar MoU had been already signed with a Russian state-owned atomic energy entity.(PTI)

Why did Russians build a last Indian nuclear plant so near to Sri Lanka? Eventual Russian nuclear plant in Sri Lanka is safe from criticism from Sri Lankan ecologists because SL is already in high danger zoon. From the side of Indians, the plant is a gift for their lovely Tamil brothers, Sri Lanka is no problem at all just invite the chef home and let he sign bilateral agreement (let he be proud thinking his country is also a Nuclear Power!) .

Sadly, today we have leaders who dance to any tune by India. So much so, even the SL Navy has stopped arresting Indian fishermen who are entering SL Territorial waters... It will be the same for Nuclear waste.. Because this government is under obligation to Indians for helping defeat MR....who stood against might of India.....

Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents proved, that there is no effective safety for such nuclear energy-generation facilities, which could provide absolute safety for the population.

What are the terms of this agreement? We seem to be doing everything to please the Indian Government and before we know it they will be dumping nuclear waste in Sri Lanka. Ranil/ Champika/President you are bending over backwards to please thy neighbor including turning a blind eye to the fishing issue. The people did not vote you in for this

People has the right to know the details of the agreement. You should make it available because we cannot trust politicos. Out politicos notoriously known to have signed agreements without giving much consideration.

What about our nuclear waste? where do you propose to dump that?

    Yapa Sunday, 22 February 2015 06:40 AM

How do you ensure that dumping is not done. Poaching Sri Lankan waters by Indian fisherman is also not permitted but it is happening.

Mr.Ranawaka always tries get the limelight and grab headlines of subservient and equally unprincipled press by finding something to carp about. Your own department is in disarray. Please forward concrete long term proposals and declare your strategy to help this country to become self sufficient in energy which is the crying need today.

In a situation of such, will the present government take any action, or show the teeth with the mouth open? You are a fighter, but see the type of people around you.Dilip

Who has benefited with the signing of this agreement? It was rejected by the previous Government. Does the President understood every thing clearly in this agreement before placing his signature?
