Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) parliamentarian Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera said today that they would do everything possible to defeat President Mahinda Rajapaksa, if he was going for a presidential election without implementing the proposals for the 19th Amendment to the Constitution prepared by ‘Pivithuru Hetak’ National Council.

The prelate expressed these views at a function held at the BMICH to release the proposal for the 19th Amendment to the Constitution prepared by Pivithuru Hetak National Council attended by politicians representing all the political parties, including opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Basil Rajapaksa and JVP parliamentarian Sunil Hadunneththi.

Ven. Rathana Thera said that the presidential election should be announced based on constitution and the law of the country and not on anyone’s personal horoscopes.

“The decision to announce a presidential election is not a wise decision at this juncture.  The government has not discussed with us, as its constituent party or with the cabinet about such an election. It has taken an arbitrary decision to hold the presidential election based on an individual’s horoscope. We kindly request the president to implement these proposals without going for a presidential election, if he is not prepared to do so. We will do everything possible to defeat him at the next presidential election,” he said.

The prelate further said that the JHU regretted for having voted for the 18th Amendment, adding that it was passed for their personal gains.

He also said that every sector including health, education, power and energy had deteriorated, while all the state institutions were running at a colossal loss.(Ajith Siriwardana)

The JHU has a vote base of only 300,000 and this will not influence the victory of Mahinda Rajapakshe.
