The Kalpitiya Special Police unit has today found 13 lobsters caught by fishermen from the Kalpitiya lagoon.

The two netted storage boxes that contained the lobsters were found submerged in the lagoon. Fishing, possession, transportation and selling lobsters are illegal during this period as it is their breeding season. No suspects have been arrested yet. The lobsters are due to be released to the sea as ordered by the Puttlam district courts. (PK)

Severe punishment should be meted to those involved in this unlawful act.

The 5 Star hotels are serving lobsters, if it is illegal during this period, are they serving stale lobsters?? Even Pannipitiya along the high level road, guys are selling live lobsters daily, openly, what action??

Before releasing the lobsters, tell them never to come this way during breeding season. Do we really know that they came after doing their bit in breeding.

Hi Malkanthi, proper cold storage can keep any food in mint condition today - thanks for the technology . So the question of stale lobster does not arise.

Those guys are selling lobsters in Pannipitiya or Kelaniya!!!. If in Kelaniya the law does not apply.

Hi Above the crowd, my apologies. You have a point.

Since when did lobster catching became a criminal offense? How come the hotels serve them at any given day? Yes, a lobster takes years to grow to the size when they could be commercially exploited and divers who catch them spare the babies and I am sure they let off the ones with eggs as they are supposed to do. But when did the ban come and who would know the breeding season? Next they might arrest you for collecting scrap metal!!!! (Scrap Metal beware!)
