UNP Kurunegala District MP Dayasiri Jayasekara speaking to the Daily Mirror online today said that the authorities should have investigated the allegations he made in Parliament on Thursday instead of ordering him out of the house. "During my speech I specifically brought up the thuggery and intimidation that was taking place in Mulleriyawa. I showed them photographs of shootings that happened during the run up to the elections but they ignored all of this and we have lost a political leader today," he said. Jayasekara was removed from the house on Thursday by parliamentarian A.H.M. Azwer who was at the chair for making inflammatory remarks.

He further went on to add that, "The crux of my speech was that there is no rule of law in this country. Thugs who are close to politicians have with them illegal weapons and this incident was due to the use of these weapons. There are gangs that operate with the ruling party politicians and todays incident showed the danger that these weapons that are used by politicians could bring," he said.

Jayasekara went on to note that the weapons that were used during the shooting were not legal weapons that were given to the policeman who were with the parliamentarians. "A policeman on duty would never open fire when there is an argument. The reason behind the shooting clearly must have been drunken-ness and thugs who were armed," he said. He also stated that, "Both Duminda Silva and Bharatha Lakshman are leaders of the people and its sad that they have to go through this predicament, at the end of the day it’s their families who will suffer the most. What we are calling for is the proper implementation of the rule of law. If that happens there is no way an incident of this sort will take place," he said.

On Thursday October 6, 2011, when Jayasekara was speaking in Parliament about the thuggery in Mulleriyawa, his speech was expunged and he was sent out of the chamber. (HF)

Thuggery is not acceptable. What about the people who gave all Island JP posts to notorious criminals like Gonawala Sunil et al? I can not remember his name. I think it atarts with R & Surname starts with W? Probably Dayasiri might be able to help me. Thugs have been running some politician and parties for the past so many years. You all politicians are responsible for that. How may positions has DJ taken ith past few years? How can people trust these politicians. I think he was trown out of the parliament for other reason, Some of them even have sided with LTTE for their own survival and political gain. Who made the country lawless. Whao gave the Police 2 weeks of holiday in 1977? We all have very short memories.

Not nice to say this... but I've heard a story where some people used an ingenious method to destroy a band of monkeys who troubled a village. They selected a place in the forest, kept large amount of toddy and other liquor and lot of weapons. The monkeys came... got themselves drunk, started fighting and...viola... weapons flashed.. and the problem gone... I think this incident shows that we can use a similar to get rid of the so called beloved leaders of ours. Goons+Parliament +alcohol +weapons = redemption for us!

Like all other things in this country this incident and even Baratha and what happened to him will be forgotten in two weeks time and things will be back to "NORMAL*. Sadly even in the opposition there are very few voices like Dayasiri who will speak out . This is a good lesson for all the thugs.

The culture of violence created and promoted by the government members themselves to intimidate the voters and oppositon members has boomeranged on themselves with one death and another near-death. Dayasiri is absolutely right but those close to the government for personal gains do not want exposures of this nature. Agree with Kalum: the guy in the ICU can hardly be called a "political leader". He is a real thug and drug dealer. It had been rumoured that the government members were going to use thugs to disrupt the elections for CMC if they find a trend towards an opposition victory. So this could be it with fatal results.
