Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka who was released this week said that he would not take revenge against those who had put him through an atrocious ordeal over the past two and a half years.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror Mr. Fonseka claimed that President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa were directly responsible for the suffering he endured.

“I will not take revenge against them and the vicious acts they committed against me. I feel very sorry for them because I expected them to act like good statesmen, yet instead they took advantage of the situation and the powers that they had been given,” he said.

He claimed that the members in the government alliance were unable to voice their differing opinions under the rule of the President. “They are in a worse prison than I was in, they can’t speak and they can’t hear—you can classify them any way you like,” he said. Mr. Fonseka further insinuated that there were cracks appearing in the government and members of the government alliance were likely to soon turn on the President and the axis of power he has created around his family.

In response to the comments by the government about various opposition parties riding on his coattails, the former Army Chief said the government too had at one time been at an advantage due to the good work he had carried out.

“They say that others are receiving light under my lamp, but the truth is that while I was Army Commander they too were illuminated by my lamp. Even today, I don’t shine my light for myself it is for the people of this country—anyone can take cover under that light, even the government,” he said. (Dianne Silva)

Why is he once again 'shooting his mouth'? That was what got him in prison the last time. Why not lie low and wait for the opportune time to take whatever action he intends without antagonizing the establishment? If he does play his cards intelligently he has a good chance of the people rallying behind him and he could be the next President. But he must be patient.
