With such a large consignment each egg must be costing no more than Rs. 3/- , add the commission to that makes it 11/=

why bringing this much eggs? no eggs in sri lanka? where is our beloved ministers? may BE these eggs for making "WATTALAPANG" FOR OUR MINISTERS TO "RECORD IN KINESBOOK" LIKE WE HAD KIRIBATH PARTY RECENTLY"

This is a bad move. The increased price of eggs will encourage more people to go into paultry farming which will improve local economy. Importing eggs to reduce market prices will have double adverse effect on the economy. It drains the foreign exchange reserves while discouraging new entrants into paultry farming.
We will end up importing eggs for ever as there will be no growth in the paultry industry.

Imported eggs from India in not a new thing. In the 60s there was plenty of India eggs sold by egg dealers mostly on the pavements. The price of Indian eggs was much cheaper that the eggs produced in Sri Lanka. There was a doubt about the quality and most preferred eggs produces in Sri Lanka. Can still remember the egg vendors removing the "India" seal from the eggs and selling them as locally produced eggs.

An egg, is an egg, is an egg.........be it from Timbaktu or Siberia. Lets hope they wont resort to the tactics of selling all eggs at a premium price claiming SL eggs are better.

This is why more people should endorse vegetarian diets! It's srtange how buddhists and hindus make up a major portion of our population in this country and people have still have such high demand for eggs and meat...

Infact, the Government's solution is short sighted and addresses only the short term requirements. Like you said it does not improve the economy as a whole worser still, the Industry.
The Government should waive off the taxes imposed on the ingredients used for the ration that is prepared for the chicken. If they can waive off taxes on cars - which is actually a counter move where there is going to be more traffic congestion adding to pollution.
Our locals (Sri Lanka) know the requirement and do get very good produce of eggs.More effective training, subsidy, facilities and technical know-how will definitely be beneficial for our people to prosper further, instead of depending on imported eggs. What if these eggs are genetically modified - what harm this could cause.

Adhoc solutions won't be a long time solution!
Now it will become a trend, no turning back, what will happen if the prices increases in India or India bans like they did it for onions?
