The Central Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the main constituent of the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) yesterday decided to ascertain the views of Parliament with regard to the letter sent by UN Human Rights High Commissioner Navi Pillay on the appointment of an investigative team on Sri Lanka and her request seeking access for the team to visit the country.

The matter had been discussed at length at a meeting of the SLFP Central Committee Chaired by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. At the outset of the meeting External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris had briefed the Central Committee members on the contents of Ms. Pillay’s letter to him.

The letter states that she had put together an investigative team headed by Sandra Beidas and that Ms. Pillai is involved in an effort to put together other senior figures at an international level to assist and advise the investigative team.

Ms. Pillay had said that the investigative team would like to visit Sri Lanka as well as other countries for its work. She had asked the Government to allow access for the team to visit the country.

The SLFP Central Committee after considering the national importance of the matter had decided to seek the views of Parliament regarding it. Therefore it had been decided to consult the Government’s other coalition partners and for House Leader Nimal Siripala De Silva to request Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa for a debate on the matter. One purpose is to test the UNP ers. They would be in a quandary, as to which way to vote.

jim pappa Thursday, 12 June 2014 06:23 PM

Wish it would be an open ballot. It would be interesting to see which way UNP votes. Bet they will abstain.

Government has officially rejected the international investigation and would not assist them. So what is the purpose of consulting the parliament?

Until Sri Lanka get rid of all the Racist supremist elements and give the proper place to most suitable irrespective of their Race, gender or religion Sri Lanka will never prosper. Reconciliation among all communities with trust, understanding and love is the only answer.
There will be no peace until justice, love and compassion is built among all communities.

the government & the president him self has already confirmed that they will not allow the international investigators to come to the country and also Sri Lankan representative already informed the UNHCR openly that the government is not accepting the proposal and will not allow the investigators to come to the country.
With all that what is the government is expecting by bringing the matter to the parilament other than to gain some stupid political mileage and to sling mud on the opposition MP;s.

jim pappa Wednesday, 11 June 2014 12:27 PM

Very sensible comment, sobers. Government is duty bound to help the war victims and widows, even if they are ex-LTTE ers. That is the best way to mend fences.

Let us not keep on talking about the past. Take action to help the war widows, give them a monthly allowance, do counseling to get the war victims from the trauma etc... look after the needs of the northerners. They are not asking a separate state. Government must help them and not listen to racist parties either Tamil,Muslim or Sinhalese. let the country be united. United we prosper divided we loose!
