The government has raised suspicion over the conduct of business tycoon Harry Jayawardene, whose wife is the Consul General for Denmark. The government information department claimed that Harry Jayawardene had held talks with the opposition and has decided to secretly support Presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka.

The government information department said that with Harry Jayawardene’s wife the Consul General for Denmark the conduct of the business tycoon may give way to issues of conflict of interest at state level.

Umm, heard of conflict of interest?
counsels are meant to be apolitical/neutral.

What happened to Ceylinco, will be the fate of Harry J., as well?

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 05:26 PM

Vasu does not, and never has, supported the General!

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 02:23 PM

    Ian,

You hit the nail perfectly. We may be literate but, by God, we are poltically naive. How the hell else to a bunch of rogues garner votes in SL?

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 02:21 PM

    Aney kawda baya wela!!!

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 12:26 PM

100% correct..... If we had 100 HJs we would have been another Singapore.....

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 12:05 PM

He became a bussines tycon because he has got one of the best genius and sharp mind.. and he can sense where the tide is heading....

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 11:50 AM

    Harry J is... Suspicious of ....??????? !!!!!.

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 08:24 AM

    For what? for supporting SF?

Where is this Sril lanka going?

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 06:04 AM

Harry J is the Consul General for Denmark. His wife is the Consul for Spain. But both these posts are of Honorary capacity and they do not deprive the holder to have his or her own political affiliations.

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 05:59 AM

Freedom of meeting is a fundamental right enshrined in the constitution. This is yet another violation of fundamental rights.

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 05:46 AM

Please allow people to select their leader for tomorrow without hatred and to their own conscience - whether it is MR or SF. It is HE MR who decided to have a poll. Then let it be fair and just

It is sad the so called information department does not know who the consul general of Denmark is. The honorary Consul General is HJ and not his wife. This info is there in many desk top diaries. I wonder how we won a war without been able to get available information leave alone the intelligence info.

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 05:22 AM

If SL had 100 Harry J's rather than 100 ministers we would have been better off. Talk to a person of Sri Lankan Airlines to see how he is admired for turning it around in 1998. Was he ever accused of benefitting by it?

Sri Lanka is a country with highest literacy rate but very low political literacy and financial literacy. If MR wins there will be many investigations and reports and mudslinging on HJ. Anyways I believe that there are many supporters of SF. But few like HJ who has the guts to express views openly and possibly face the slack.

Is this the end of our favorite breakfast cereal imports?

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 01:59 AM

harry is cheater,he should be arressted.

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:32 PM

Now it has become 'illegal' to support SF! Typical dictatorial behaviour ...

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 12:52 AM

    What the... ?

isn't this suppose to be a "democraic" country where people can vote or support the candidate they want even though their spouse or children support another. Let's see after the 26th who the traitors when they start packing up their bags.

We need a change in this country.

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 12:29 AM

'65% traitors, in Sri Lanka,' according to Chinthanaya!

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 11:07 PM

Then why is Vasu supporting the General? It was HORAGODA who was accused of the Insurance deal and HORAGODA is with them now!

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 11:03 PM

Tell me another one: Just like the other one!

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:28 PM

Harry J. does not need to stoop to these alleged levels, nor does his wife ... The focus should be on the election and not on trying to intimidate or accuse individuals, for no valid reason!

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 06:09 PM

Just another 'cooked-up' story! The government media institutions are working around the clock, for MR's campaign. You can't fool all the people, all the time!

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:47 PM

He should have the freedom of choice to support whomever he wishes! Is the government dictating to businessmen, whom to support?

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:47 PM

Naturally, he must have a grudge against MR's government, for Vasu's role in reversing the corrupt selling of SLI 'for a song'! 'Birds of the flock,' will always get together!

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:46 PM

He is a quality guy - never mingles with third class politicians! Neither will he bow-down to thuggery! His policy is 'good for good & bad for bad.' No one can shake him!

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:43 PM

It's unfair to demand or expect favour from him!

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:38 PM

He may want to get the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, back!

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:34 PM

OH! The panic. Everyone will be a 'suspect,' as the last days of their rule get nearer!

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:33 PM

    Today, Harry J.! Tomorrow who?

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:33 PM

Because he is not supporting the 'sinking ship'?
