State split on Fonseka’s heroics

The opposition United National Party (UNP) sees a split on the views by the government on General Sarath Fonseka’s heroics as a war hero after Eastern Province Chief Minister Pillayan conceded that Fonseka was a war hero.

The UNP, in a statement on its website, said that while some senior government officials were discrediting General Fonseka saying he had not played a key role in the victory over the LTTE, the Eastern Province Chief Minister had said otherwise.

In an interview with Daily Mirror online last week, Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan has said that General Sarath Fonseka was a “war hero” because he played a key role in defeating the LTTE and did his best for the nation.

“It is significant to note that while the Government’s Minister is making such praiseworthy comments and credits him (Fonseka) with the war victory, the Government’s Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapkse in an interview with the Singapore Strait Times, had disdained and discredited the world acclaimed undisputed War hero as not contributing to the defeat of the LTTE in a major way adding that any other Commander could have accomplished what Fonseka achieved,” the UNP website said. Both Pillayan and Gota are correct.
If any other Commander was in charge at that time, that person could have become the war hero instead of Sarath Fonseka.

The true ability of a war hero tested on the battlefield and not in an air conditioned room. Pilliyan is one personnel who truely experienced the ability of SF in the battle field.
War was fought in the battlefield using brain, past experience,weapons and, not in the air conditioned room using mouths.
So, let us not rob another person's credit of his true ability. SF should be credited and decorated wtih his brave soldiers for liberating mother Lanka.

Pillayan knows what it is to fight hands on where the fighting is taking place. While not going to the extent of praising the man, I have to admit that he seems to have more guts and more brains than our own Sinhala Ministers who do and say things only if it's benficial to them. or to say it in the correct sinhala way "kade yanawa". Leaving the Ministers aside even our own Sinhala people who called SF a hero is now calling him a dispicable traitor. Unfortunately, that's the type of people we have in Sri Lanka and that's why Sri Lanka is the way it is. If MR were to suddenly say that Prabakaran is a hero, I'm quite sure a lot of people wil also start calling Prabakaran a hero.

This is typical Sinhala atitude.No wonder every one in the world is taking the Sinhala people for a ride. I wont be surprised if there is another uprising against the sinhala people. It is time for Mahinda to listen to the Mahanayaka's advise and release SF and leave him alone. Let the people of the country decide, because it belongs to them.

Pillayan, like SF - had hands on experience in the battlefield, unlike Gota who abandoned the army & ran away to the US & is now a permanent resident of the US.
