In the midst of protests by the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) which had refused to accept the legality of the private medical university in Malabe, the Higher Education Minister today vowed that the university will continue to function and that many more private universitiesof the kind will be established in Sri Lanka in the future.

Minister S. B. Dissanayake said the Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM), the first private medical university in Sri Lanka which was established in 2008, is a legally functioning, accredited institution although the GMOA has said that it should not have legal recognition on the basis that the medical college was functioning as a branch of a Russian university and therefore could be legally established in the country.

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has vowed to continue with a strike tomorrow. “We will definitely stage an all-island strike tomorrow in protest against the authority’s decision to legalise the medical institution,” a GMOA sources said today. The GMOA has also decided to withdraw its membership from the SLMC, if the institution is accepted as legal entity. (Olindhi Jayasundere)

This news has created few concerns on private Medical training facilities.
1.What will happen to the graduates of this Medical faculty once they complete their studies?
2.Who is the organization monitoring the quality of the medical training given by private Medical faculties.
3.Is it a necessary to have private Medical faculties in Sri Lanka since we don't have any shortage of doctors in the country.

    Excellent move.

Even my first (almost reflex) reaction to private medical schools was to think 'this will be unfair on those who can't afford the fees'
But after thinking about it, I realise this is not the case.
    1) Just because a pvt medical school starts, it doesn't mean there will be a smaller intake to the free govt universities. So there will not be less free places.
    2) Those who will enter the pvt medical school would have either had a second shy at ALs to get into local uni next year, or more likely, go abroad.
    3) The proposal includes treating pvt medical graduates the same as foreign grads. i.e. they too would have to sit the Act16 exam and will be at the bottom of the list when given internship upon graduation.

So, people should go beyond their initial reaction

They do not oppose foreign medical graduates. Some foreign medical schools are limited to name boards and still GMO recognise those. Now even Bangaldesh and Nepal also offer medical degrees and we are still behind them and in the near future even Maldives also do same thing. Why GMOA oppose? Becasue all of their children can send to India, Bangladesh or Rusia to study. What foolish people? We are still living in stone age

Good thing. GMOS please be sensed...
We have to develop and spread our wings. Cant sit in the well any more.

    Managala Wednesday, 07 September 2011 06:32 AM

education needs to be free but medicine and consultation is not free some thing to think about...

    Managala Wednesday, 07 September 2011 06:30 AM

I'm disagreeing to point made that people entering these universities with low A/L results would be low quality doctors why i refuse that fact is all the theorems we learn in school days are not from formal educated A/L passed practitioners( I dont think archemedis did ALs) intelligence cannot be measured using a written exam therefore opening private educational institues will benefit masses who could get entered into the government universities and another fact is government is so keen on private universities but does not show that much interest to develop existing universities that need to be address first than opening private universities anyway education is not free anywhere in the world and our current university students misuse this special grant...

It doesnt Gayan, if you go with right one with right system. As Ramesh says I am not a supporter of this regime at all, but I fully support this idea, We need more Pvt .Unis & Med. Colleges.
Very sorry to say that the knowledge or the standard of our present lot of graduates are appalling.

    Rashmi Wednesday, 07 September 2011 06:00 AM

All GMOA members will take the memberships of PMOA as all of them do private practice as well.

Gayan Samarasekara Wednesday, 07 September 2011 05:56 AM

Private universities risk the equal opportunity in education.

    Ramesh Tuesday, 06 September 2011 01:21 PM

i am not a supporter of the MR regime. But fully support SB's efforts to bring private Universities

    Marwin Tuesday, 06 September 2011 03:10 PM

Hats off! Be firm Hon. Minister. Don;t give-into GMOA thuggery or threat. Establish more private medical colleges. Also more Dental and Veterinary schools as well. If the GMOA continues with threatning strike action then amend the medical ordinance and scrap the Act 16 exam requirement for foreign medical graduates and allow them to practice medicine soon after they qualify from the foreign universities. There are many of these medically qualified graduates available who have qualified from better medical colleges than what we have in Sri Lanka.. Why should these graduates sit for the Act 16 exam after all these students have also studied in foreign medical schools which are recognized by the Sri Lanka Medical Council which also recognizes the local medical facalties and their degrees, in order to practice medicine and surgery. Once again Hon. S.B. be firm and dont give-in at any cost. Teach GMOA and their members a good lesson who strike for every little things like a child..

    Patriot Tuesday, 06 September 2011 02:24 PM

Create Private Medical Officers Association (PMOA) and continue private medical universities. For students, DO NOT enroll to the branches of unheard junk foreign universities. World class name behind your degree matters a lot.

    Dinithi Tuesday, 06 September 2011 02:22 PM

If not for this university parents will still send their children off to Russia with four times the cost and the graduates come back and sit for the conversion program test and gets employed in the country. GMOA understandably is tring to protect the local university's monopoly status. But it is too costly for the country when students go to foreign universities.

Denel doctor Tuesday, 06 September 2011 02:14 PM

We support Mr S.B. Dissanayaka & Bandula Gunawardana. Bring more Private Univesities, specially Medical colleges to sri_Lanka. this is the need of the country. Let them streike for Months.

    PodiMalli Tuesday, 06 September 2011 02:12 PM

What's the beef? If these new institutions are qualified and certified, I think they should be allowed to function. Obviously, there are more students than the current university system can accept. Many Sri Lankan students would not go abroad for higher studies if they had world-standard institutions at home. And in the case of students going to the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand--most of them will attempt to stay on and not return to their motherland, where their skills are needed.

Imran Hussein Tuesday, 06 September 2011 01:46 PM

Fighing to keep the monopoly. Pure greed.
    Dismantle that GMOA.

Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 06 September 2011 01:45 PM

This man, SB, seems to be an expert in ruffling the feathers wherever he goes.

    peace Tuesday, 06 September 2011 01:45 PM

great decision. GMOA please try to treat the patients. dont be obstacle for others, presently im in middle east simply and do not have a degree, this cause lots of problem for us to progress in our career. if u look at indians filipinos etc all have some sort of a degree and thier chances for promotions are high. Establish more universities for those who has the ability to study but not seleceted for gove uni.

What happen foriegn graduate medical students? can you explain some one why SLMC and GMOA opposite them. i am not happy this medical college.

    Mathan Tuesday, 06 September 2011 01:36 PM

If the country is without corruption and having good democracy, then it will be safe to allow such institutions. Otherwise the common man children will loose the chance to the right place in future.
