The leaders of the African National Alliance (ANC) have expressed its disappointment over the absence of its Sri Lanka’s External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris in the party’s centenarian celebrations in South Africa recently, informed sources said today.

The government did not send Prof. Peiris as its representative in the event on January as a mark of protest against the invitation extended to the Global Tamil Forum, an LTTE front. Instead, the government sent Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to South Africa Shehan Ratnavel as its envoy.

However, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) participated in the event and interacted with the leaders of the ANC on the national question. During the meeting, the ANC leaders have reportedly expressed their disappointment over the absence of Prof. Peiris.

They have reportedly said that Sri Lanka should have seized the opportunity to learn from the liberation struggle of South Africa.

The ANC, once led by South Africa’s iconic President Nelson Mandela, was instrumental in the abolition of the legalised system of racial discrimination in that country. (Kelum Bandara)

It is definitely a good thing that Aparthied ended in South Africa. Ol' boy Nelson is an icon for all those who seek them. But the bottom line is, SA has been heading to the toilet ever since the ANC took power. Though they have not deteriorated at the speed of Zimbabwe, SA has still become a relative non entity in the world since then. However the SA economy still holds up based purely on the fact they possess massive stocks of natural resources, including gold.

    ANC is 100% true

ANC should have had more respect for the SL Govt and sense not to invite the GTF who openly supported and still support the proscribed terrorist group, LTTE. Anyway there are no parallels between SA's struggle which was against apartheid and ours which was a terrorist issue.

    harbi Thursday, 19 January 2012 06:47 AM

Someone need to tell the ANC seriously the differance between their case and ours! Its not good for a country like SA to prove the world that they are so blind and unaware about the reality! They( SA ) got it all mixed up so badly and this is so unfrotunate!!!!!

    Raja Friday, 20 January 2012 12:25 AM

Sri Lanka need to ask the ANC as to what SL could have learnt from them and then explain to them the vast difference between legalised aparthied that existed in South Africa and the LTTE terrorists trying to carve out a monoethnic nation. The only law similar to aparthied in SrLanka is the Thesawalam law enacted by the colonial powers to give exclusive rights to lands in the North to South Indians brought by them to displace native SrLankans on Tobacco plantations.
