The main opposition UNP today requested the government to provide the newly made health hazard free school bag free of charge just for one year and to reduce taxes charged on paper used to manufacture stationery used by the school children.

UNP MP Ajith P. Perera told a news conference today that these concessions should be given to people as they are faced with severe economic hardships. (YP)

These bright ideas come only when you are in the opposition, when you were in the government you stop all subsidiaries such as manure for farmers, school books, school uniform etc. Even a small straw is good enough to hang on to be opposition leader

FREE FREE FREE. What else you want for free????

Ane yako... Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:29 AM

Please give a subsidy for luxury vehicles for MPs please help the poor man educate his child by giving it for free atleast in the rural areas and non-national level or popular schools. It would help them a lot

Think Mai Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:50 AM

Huh, UNP just wasted a little energy telling those words, but we can't do all what we have said. UNP just trying to mock the Govt to do things they cannot even think of doing if they are the Govt!
if it is free, cant they give all sri lankan citizens that bag (well, it is free).

    Ramesh Thursday, 30 December 2010 12:27 PM

when the give Vehicle permits to the ministers, why not a peanut is given to the tax payers?

Instead of bluffing, you should try to see the good side of the proposal. We as a tax payer, what are we getting from the government? poor roads, poor drainage, poor transport, poor education...etc. etc.

I think its time to wake up and get the maximum for the tax payers...

lalith Wije Thursday, 30 December 2010 01:06 PM

Again another stupid suggestion. Why not get the private sector and others to sponsor these bags with their logo or get Sajith to go on an all island visit distributing these bags to students? This will put the govt in an embarrassing situation . Lalith Wije

    Educationist Thursday, 30 December 2010 02:20 PM

Give free computers to all students above Grade 8 onwards.

    cool Thursday, 30 December 2010 08:16 PM

UNP did gave free bracelets and condome for the gays and half of the country to terrorists LTTE.UNP will never get a chance to govern the country AGAIN...

    Lakmikanth Thursday, 30 December 2010 08:45 PM

How many text books are wasted with errors? With the money wasted, the school bags could be given free at least for Samurdhi beneficiaries.

    Aiya Thursday, 30 December 2010 10:45 AM

    Happy 2011

    abc Friday, 31 December 2010 02:04 AM

hey, keep shut. if they can waste 1.5 million for a opening ceromany in Kaduwela just foe a library, why cant they utilize it for poor children

    Ariya Friday, 31 December 2010 05:50 AM

Maybe it is better to make place to keep the heavy books in the school itself, rather than demanding these children tugging heavy bags on their little shoulders!

    SJ Friday, 31 December 2010 07:09 AM

    Easier said than done!

    ssds Friday, 31 December 2010 07:12 AM

Lets hope UNP comes back before we starve to death.

prematilleke Mawella Friday, 31 December 2010 08:11 AM

A Very god proposal by any political party, Hats off to UNP. On the otherway, if the government can spend billions for the huge cabinet and MPs in various form, this move is a land mark in Knowledge capital of sri Lanka.

    obama Friday, 31 December 2010 10:22 AM

    Nothing free anymore in srilanka!

    farshard Thursday, 30 December 2010 07:49 AM

Good request indeed....unwanted expensive reduce and give more consider about this matter....

knight Rider Thursday, 30 December 2010 10:38 AM

reduce the subjects per day and the children will have a lesser load to carry. The school bags widely available are NOT designed for books they are travel bags which ruins the books.

simple mind Thursday, 30 December 2010 10:08 AM

And us tax payers to foot the bill for everything given free, when the govt increases taxes thereafter then we grumble. Charge a nominal fee otherwise they will not appriciate it.

    adahan Thursday, 30 December 2010 10:08 AM

It's a compassionate move but is it not a burden on the deteriorating economy of the country. Instead of free of charge it's wise to sell at a reasonable cost until our economy picks up and acquire stability.

oyage podi guru Thursday, 30 December 2010 09:34 AM

The children in this country do NOT need free school bags; they need smaller classes so that their teachers can teach. No teacher can deal with 40 -50 children in a classroom. Why in the name of sanity do you think there is so much private tuition in the country? Children are not learning much in the regular classrooms because the classes are too big, and no doubt there is a lot of playing around and distractions, not least of which is the noise from other classrooms. o. p. d.

    nayag Thursday, 30 December 2010 09:26 AM

we cant complain about free education.. its a great adavantage for all the people given by the government! and it's peoples' right to understand the value of it and appreciate. but as you say this will never happen in SRI LANKA!!.even this free school bag idea is a gud thing!! but they'll have to let people feel the value of this thing first!

Sonali Gamage Thursday, 30 December 2010 08:59 AM

There should be a price for everything. Nothing should come free. At least a nominal charge. Anything free will not be appreciated after some time. Strikes and unlawful incidents in the state universities are due to our free education system. Why more and more free? Remember somebody is paying for these, nothing in this world comes free!

    dhiga Thursday, 30 December 2010 08:58 AM

There's no value when you give things free. A subsidy is much better. Health & Education should also be the same.

    Narendraraj Thursday, 30 December 2010 08:46 AM

Free bag, free education, free unform, free milk, free lunch and everybody wants to make their children doctors and engineers. Nothing should be given free we need labourers and menial workers as well.

    hewa Thursday, 30 December 2010 08:46 AM

Dear sir i fully agree with your proposal.I hope the president may consider this because he loves our children more than any other. As he himself told he is the proud farther of all srilankan children. Our great leader please do this as you are giving millions worth vehicle permit to the ministers and MPs.THis small gift for our next generatins.I am sure these children will be very happy with you not like your ministers who are unhappy when they donot get more benifits.

    MK Thursday, 30 December 2010 08:49 AM

exactly.. he is trying to make political slogans even though he knows that the cost of production of these bags are going to be collosal.

    Maidan Thursday, 30 December 2010 08:33 AM

at least reduce the price from Rs. 600/- to Rs. 300/-

Ossan Salam - Doha Thursday, 30 December 2010 08:32 AM

Even UNPers too are ready to offer "free bag" to their leaders within three months period !

    micky Thursday, 30 December 2010 08:23 AM

Give them to MPs with all text books and send them back to school. At least they will learn something

    MagodisThuma Thursday, 30 December 2010 08:12 AM

I'd like to give a free bag to Rail, to pack-up his rubbish & disappear for ever !.

Nihal Amarasekera Thursday, 30 December 2010 07:44 AM
