New laws on standards for the use, sale and display of full face helmets will be Gazetted soon, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said today.

CAA Chairman Rumi Marzook said the Gazette was to be issued on the requests of the Police Headquarters and the National Safety Council.

Legal action will be taken against those who sell and display full face helmets that are not up to standard under the new laws.

“The laws will be Gazetted after we study the standards that have been set by the Sri Lankan Standards Institute,” he said.

Police reported a total of 39,801 road accidents for 2013. Out of them 2,340 were fatal.

794 of the deaths were accidents related to motor cycles. (Darshana Sanjeewa)
