More than the increase in the number of lanes, is the necessity toi enforce very strictly that buses stick to the extreme left of the road, that vehicles dont overtake from the left, that pedestrians corss at the zebra crossings, etc. and other road rules.
Katussa Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:16 PM
Pedestrians, go to hell!!!
RP Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:31 PM
Dear Mansoor. Be patient. This road will be developed because it is the road to Hambanthota. The only city the government is interested in.
DHA Tuesday, 12 October 2010 03:20 PM
When are you'll going to repair Bloemendhal road ? (This road leads to Sugadadasa stadium....!!!
v7pas Tuesday, 12 October 2010 03:25 PM
That's true and that's why a seperate lane for buses should be given as some readers previously mentioned.
dauwa Tuesday, 12 October 2010 03:27 PM
Please come & have a look on the streets in Gulf countries
Simple Sydney Tuesday, 12 October 2010 10:05 PM
A separate lane for motor cyclists too like they have in Malaysia.
Royce Wednesday, 13 October 2010 12:28 AM
Negambo road is very good example for road manners. Police very strict in using lanes. This same thing should be followed on galle road.
izy Wednesday, 13 October 2010 01:23 AM
I've seen Private and Public bus drivers overtaking on the 3rd lane in Mount Lavinia @ high speed. Once I was on a pedestrian crossing with my 9 yr old daughter and both sides had heavy traffic, a motorcyclist was coming at me and honking me to rush in traffic which I did not do. As I saw him come towards me I stretched my hands to stop him yet he hit me and lost balance.Luckily I wasn't hurt and he tried to speed off. I had a bunch of keys and threw at him which hit him on his back. As he sped off the crowd was roaring. There were 2 traffic police officers who gave chase and brought him back. They asked me if I wanted to press charges and if I was injured and I did not. This is the attitude of MOST motorcyclist, 3 wheelers and PRIVATE bus drivers. Hope the Motor traffic Dept with the help of the Traffic police can REVOKE the licence of this kind of drivers and riders so that they will not be a menace to society

Let us have an underground railway network like in Tokyo. Then most people would not want to travel in their own vehicles, and the traffic congestion would reduce.
dinesh Wednesday, 13 October 2010 03:22 AM
Good work
mansoor Tuesday, 12 October 2010 01:08 PM
Please be reminded to authorities Galle road is not from Bamba to Collupitiya - It is from Galle to Gall Face end.
siripala Wednesday, 13 October 2010 04:38 AM
Dear Knight rider, Please tell me you are kidding when you say about corrosion. Gave me a good laugh... How about the people who live along the costal line? And you are just worried about driving along the costal line coz of the corrosion? and that is one of your main concerns?
It saddens me that the intelligence level of people like you and how you prioritise the issues. God bless mother lanka with people like this!
ajith Wednesday, 13 October 2010 05:00 AM
We need an alternate road to Galle road as it is a mess for motorist in the mornings and evenings.
I salute and support who ever who take a bold decision to complete the Marine drive as at the moment it ends up at Kollupity and Wellawatta.
Rohan Wednesday, 13 October 2010 07:34 AM
LOL !!
You wash the vehicle right and keep it right... I live near the sea and I don't have any issue !
lalana Wednesday, 13 October 2010 08:39 AM
all this is not needed as the traffic is only in Bambalapitiya and not Colpetty Pls open the Marine drive upto colpetty.all will be solved
lalana Wednesday, 13 October 2010 08:40 AM
all this is needed pls open up the marine drive upto colpetty evgerything will be sorted
shanthi Wednesday, 13 October 2010 09:07 AM
marine drive is up to kolpetty is also not going sort out the problems , because station road of kolpetty is also to be widened , there should be a traffic light n police traffic control also to be there for 24 hrs a day.
Jalba Wednesday, 13 October 2010 09:25 AM
Until we find a trusted ,punctual & polite public transport service never ever eradicate traffic issue
MghUS Wednesday, 13 October 2010 05:29 PM
predestrians will have to learn how to fly my friend ! lol :)
jp Thursday, 28 October 2010 08:08 AM

RationalThinker Tuesday, 12 October 2010 09:17 AM
very good point "Concerned". Bus lanes are common in many developed countries. But the difficult thing will be of course, implementing it and punishing offenders. Let's see if the govt can do something
Wara Tuesday, 12 October 2010 08:24 AM
How about expedite Sea Side road upto Galle Face where as now at Kollupitiya
Fayad Tuesday, 12 October 2010 08:28 AM
Good move, continue this up to Dehiwala to ease traffic.
Mel Tuesday, 12 October 2010 08:29 AM
I hope the authorities will also take appropriate measurements to the giant rut in the middle of Galle road in wellawatte. This is causing alot of traffic and its amazing how this has been neglected for such a long time.
Nalin Pradeep Tuesday, 12 October 2010 08:34 AM
Yes, Sea side road is very useful to avoid traffic jam.
ME Tuesday, 12 October 2010 08:36 AM
Yes Still it has not opened for the public.
Nimal69 Tuesday, 12 October 2010 08:40 AM
Five lane traffic and no vehicle willing to stop for a pedestrian trying to cross from a zebra crossing.. we are in for a lot of road accidents at this stretch!!!
knight Rider Tuesday, 12 October 2010 08:50 AM
There should lane restrictions, where heavy vehicles and public transport (buses, 3wheelers) allowed to use only specific lanes. also control jay walkers and build over head bridges near schools and hospitals. fence the side walks so people do not walk on the main roads. AND WHICH GOVERNMENT WILL WIDEN THE ROAD FROM KALUTARA TO MATARA ? its so scary at the bends since the vehicles travel much faster than it did 40 years ago.
RP Tuesday, 12 October 2010 08:53 AM
I have to admit that the police has become good lately. traffic is somewhat well managed nowadays compared to the past.
I also hope the rpads will be developed in all parts. after the recent rains, the Kandy Colombo road has become undrivable as there are so many potholes. The contruction of road in kiribathgoda started when i was a teenager. now I am 44. still the construction is on and very dangerous snd filled barrels are in the middle of the road.
I hope the government will look at the entire country. For the moment, the concentration seems to be on galle road and hambantota only. Our country has over 25000 sq kilo meters and all places should be developed.
JK Tuesday, 12 October 2010 09:04 AM
Does the number of lanes matter? Have you ever seen anyone stick to their lane?
Citizen Tuesday, 12 October 2010 09:08 AM
Our people do not know to drive on a 5 lane road. They keep jumping from one lane to another. Specially buses are a menace. Also how will the pedestrains cross the 5 lane road?
Tharaka Chanaka Tuesday, 12 October 2010 09:15 AM
This Uni flow is a complete disaster.
Vehicles are cutting lanes, over taking from blind spots, extra fuel consumption in case you miss a turn,...its a night mare!
Its also high time they open the stretch from Bamba Junc in marine drive up to Colpetty without keeping it closed
Concerned Tuesday, 12 October 2010 08:22 AM
Good effort. Please consider assigning one lane for private buses and implement it strictly.
gowravi Tuesday, 12 October 2010 09:28 AM
Very true, no one, specially the pvt bus drives NEVER will follow the lane rules. Their aim is not to carry the passangers safely, but to overtake every possible vehicle , keep changing the lanes and reach the destination first. They don't care even if the bus is empty !!
willow Tuesday, 12 October 2010 09:28 AM
If you can control the private buses and 3 wheelers, we are OK??? they are the biggest traffic rule offenders goes un checked???
Rohan Tuesday, 12 October 2010 09:33 AM
Please do not allow CTB & Private passenger buses to use marine drive because it creates heavy traffic.
knight Rider Tuesday, 12 October 2010 09:34 AM
but regular use of sea side road will cause corrosion !
Fayad Tuesday, 12 October 2010 09:35 AM
Subways instead pedestal crossings at main points & marine drive extension from Galle face to Dehiwala will give ease tariff
manel Tuesday, 12 October 2010 09:35 AM
Will us oldies ever be able to cross the Galle road? Climbing up overhead bridges is only possible for some pedestrians! And why doesnt a Govt paper give daily photos/ information about the road digging. We have to discover each day what new obstacles have to be faced when we go out.
sourlanka Tuesday, 12 October 2010 10:07 AM
Finally in the year 2010, a new era for Galle Rd users !!.
Sad, but BIG thank you
sltk2004 Tuesday, 12 October 2010 10:07 AM
Very good idea. How about another land for the three wheelers and possibly for motor bike ?
Dr. Mervyn Tuesday, 12 October 2010 10:17 AM
Everyone, Please shat-up and wait till I finish all my work.
I Hussein Tuesday, 12 October 2010 10:41 AM
Redesigning and allocating space for parking is very good. This has to axpand further. I reckon that three wheelers must be banned and introduce law cost taxi service. Its a manace plus sound and environment polution. There must be some standards for Mo-bikes too (No discipline at all).
