Presidential candidate Sarath Kongahage filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition in court today challenging the candidacy of General Sarath Fonseka at the upcoming Presidential elections.
Mr. Kongahage had earlier opposed to Fonseka’s appointment during the accepting of nominations by the Elections Commissioner saying he was a US citizen. (SRF)

Green Card in the USA is similar to that of the Permanent Resident Card in most of the European countries. I am also a PR card holder but still in possession of my Sri Lankan ID and the SL Passport. The PR card allows us to live and work in these countries but we haven't surrendered out Sri Lankan Identities and we are only ex-patriates earning the much required foreign exchange to our dear motherland. The Green Card or the PR card doesn't mean that our intention is to give up our Sri Lankan identity but it is only prerequisiteto apply for citizenship if we wish and that too after a certain number of years but still we can have dual citizenship which entitles all the rights in both countries. Why not ConGahage file an FR case against those who have obtained US citizenship and holding very high positions in the Sri Lanka Government.

SF obtained a green card(with lot of hardships) as he is desiring to work & live in US. Bcos he doesn't want to live in Sri Lanka. So his love & loyalty to the country is highly questionable. SIMILARLY, ALL THOSE LEFT THIS COUNTRY AND LIVING ABROAD ARE THE SAME. THEY ALL PREFER WEALTH OVER THE COUNTRY. BE HONEST PPL.

High time the Constitution is amended to specify at least some amount of IQ for a person who is going to contest as President of Sri Lanka because this man Kongahage seems to be a real idiot who does not know the difference between a Green Card and a PR. I wonder why he is not bothered about other Green Card and PR holders who are holding very responsible positions in this government affecting national security as well. Before trying to become President and rule the whole country, it would do him well to convince his wife to vote for him at the forthcoming elections because charity must begin at home.

It seems inconsistent that a US Green Card holder should aspire to become the President of SL. SF should give up his Green Card to establish his bona fides. And the Constitution should be amended if necessary to ensure that only Sri Lankan citizens living in Sri Lanka and who do not have any other citizenship or such things as Green Cards or Permanent Resident status in other countries, are eligible to stand for election for President or as an MP>
