A Fundamental rights violation petition challenging the alleged arbitrary arrest and detention of General Sarath Fonseka was filed before the Supreme Court today. His wife Mrs. Anoma Fonseka and New Democratic Front Secretary Ms Shamila Perera filed the Petition for and on behalf of General Fonseka.

The Petition stated that commencing immediately upon his proclamation as the Common Opposition Candidate, there were additional security threats posed on him by those opposing his candidature; which included direct and/or indirect threats from the incumbent administration who were fielding the President as a candidate for re-election to office.

The petition was filed for the alleged infringement of his fundamental rights to the freedom of thought and conscience, freedom from torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and punishment, right to equality and equal protection of the law, freedom from discrimination on the grounds of political opinion, freedom from arbitrary arrest and detention, freedom from unlawful detention, freedom of speech and expression and freedom of association guaranteed in the Constitution.

Tamils did not have the fundamentals rights because they did not have power. Sarath Fonseka does not have Power why should we have fundametanl rights.
In 1958 when Tamils staged sathygraha government of that time set goons to attack them. they did not retaliate so why shoudl SF supporters retaliate.
What SF did to Tamils, Gota is doing to him why should people now get agitated

Wonder why he has said to BBC that he will divulge all he know, saw, heard of war crimes (if any) to international community? How can he be stopped if he starts again to damage sri lanka's name by war crimes crap? Just wondering!!!!

Very interesting that all the comments are supporting Fonseka who has openely said there were war crimes and he is going to reveal everybody who did it. SO YOU PEOPLE MUST ALL BE TAMIL TIGER supporters OR you are idiots who hate SRI LANKA. That Tamil man who said Sri Lankan is a 3rd world country. LOOK MAN, Sri Lanka is not a 3rd world country anymore. If you dont know about it from where you are hiding, go and read recent IMF notes abuot Sri Lankans ecoonomic developmetn and upgrade from 3rd world. I can understand why all these TAMILS who are using Sinhala names are supporting Fonseka. he is a traitor!

Wait and see ... SF will be released in April ... maybe on the 7th ... and all voters will do the same, as they did on the 26th.

Mahanda Chinthanaya is far superior to any laws on Human Rights, in Sri Lanka !

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 06:50 PM

April 08, will decide the future of our country. Hope people will vote for democracy and the end of corruption !

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 06:47 PM

The General is more powerful under capture, because, now, he has even more supporters. He would inspire more people to take action against all oppressive powers. Oppression is a grave sin, under any religion or philosophy. No good can come from it !

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 06:47 PM

All the restrictions apply only to the Opposition and innocent citizens like us ...

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 06:32 PM

DEAR GENERAL ... HOLD ON FOR WHILE TILL YOUR TURN ARRIVES. ALMIGHTY GOD IS WITH YOU, DEAR HERO. WE WILL FIGHT FOR YOUR FREEDOM.

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 12:06 PM

Fonseka must be released immediately or Sri Lanka will be in dire consequences and it is the citizen of this country who will have to suffer.

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 12:56 PM

Lets see if we have any rights in this country. To the Courts of this country preserve our fundamental rights

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 12:54 PM

This has to be looked at as Fundamental Rights or violation of Army Act which he was bound by when he was in the Army and as a Retired General. Let the law take its action

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 12:28 PM

This is the civilised approach against our arrogant king. However the Sri Lankan voters should know they can give the verdict at the general election and protecting their votes.

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 12:12 PM

All the Tamil people has the same problem since from the independent. We know the pain of detention. but still we are in jail because we do not have the power. Now SF has not power . so he is with us. When others are coming to detention? they can not escape because one supreme power is here. That will give justice to all.

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 12:12 PM

Do more protests against this cruel government...A man who shed blood for his country three times.he was re born for the good of this country...he played a big role in wiping out terrorism in Sri Lanka...and this is how SL government treat their soldiers? i thought this is a good Buddhist country...

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 12:07 PM

May Justice Prevail for Our General !!!
