The United National Party (UNP) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) will today bring to parliament, the issue of the killing of the Chilaw fisherman during last week’s protest rally over the massive increase in fuel prices.

UNP sources said Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will make a special statement in the House under section 23/2 of the Standing Orders on the killing of fisherman Anthony Fernando. They said Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa had already been notified.

JVP front-liner Anura Kumara Dissanayake is also expected to make a special statement on the undemocratic acts that have been taking place during the past few weeks. According to party sources Mr. Dissanayake in his statement would speak on the killing of Anthony Fernando, attacks on the protest rallies and the burning of a body in Thimbirigasyaya.

Meanwhile a three-hour debate will be held on Friday over the increase in fuel prices and the issues faced by the fishermen. The JVP is expected to move the motion while the UNP is expected to second it.

A request made by both parties last week to summon parliament to discuss the fuel price increase and its subsequent results was turned down by the government.

In the meantime UNP parliamentarian Jayalath Jayawardne who was hit by a tear gas canister during last week’s UNP protest in Colombo Fort is expected to raise a privilege issue. (Yohan Perera)

There will be a court order to prevent bringing this matter before the parliament.

Nothing will happen as the government, with its steamroller majority, will just brush these aside and will carry on merrily as usual.

While the indiscriminate killing of this fishermen by a democratically elected government needs to be condemned, why wasnt their this kind of hype when innocent tamils were getting harrassed, maimed and killed in the past? Does a person need to be sinhalese and only sinhalese to seek and receive justice in Sri Lanka?
