Over 120 houses in the Sri Lankan refugee camp at Mottamalai in Tamil Nadu were gutted when a major fire broke out, Indian police said today.
The incident took place during the evening damaging all the houses in the camp. No casualties were reported, however, property worth about Rs two lakh was destroyed.
Officials suspect a short circuit to be the reason behind the fire. Three fire tenders from nearby towns of Rajapalayam and Srivilliputhur doused the flames after a two hour battle.
State minister for Backward class welfare K K S S R Ramachandran visited the camp today and distributed food, essential items and saris. The minister said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had ordered payment of Rs 2,000 in cash, five kg of rice and two litres of kerosene for the 60 affected families. (PTI)
