Former Sri Lanka team Assistant coach Paul Farbrace will take over as the next Sri Lanka coach from Graham Ford, after the series against Pakistan in December-January.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Executive Committee ratified his appointment unofficially last evening and decided to call Farbrace for a routine interview, which will take place on Monday at the SLC Headquarters.

“Chief national selector Sanath Jayasuriya has been in touch with Farbrace during past few days and confirmed to the Ex Co that Farbrace will present himself for an interview on Monday,” a source said.

“Farbrace has had discussions with his present employer Yorkshire County Cricket Club and has confirmed that he can take up the job. SLC Ex-Co has also agreed unanimously Farbrace as the best candidate for the job. So, basically it is confirmed and the interview on Monday will basically be to discuss the way forward,” added the source.

There had been initial resistance for Farbrace from some ex-co members who had instead wanted outgoing Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore who coached Sri Lanka to World Cup glory in 1996. But following Jayasuriya’s presentation in support of Farbrace yesterday, the decision had been unanimous.

Former English first class cricketer Farbrace is currently assistant coach to Jason Gillespie at Yorkshire. He had applied for the Sri Lanka job earlier but later withdrew from the race.

Farbrace who was assistant coach with the Sri Lanka team to Trevor Bayliss from 2007, was wounded in the Lahore terrorist attack on the national team and in March 2009 he left the job shortly to join Kent as head coach before taking up his current position at Yorkshire.

Nicknamed "Farbie", he was a talented wicket-keeper and a right-handed batsman who represented Kent from 1987 to 1989 and Middlesex from 1990 to 1995 in 40 first-class matches.

As a coach Farbrace was in charge of England's Under 19 side and the England national women's team in 2000. He was running the Kent Academy, before he was he was appointed as the Sri Lanka assistant coach in July 2007. (Channaka de Silva)

Since he seems to be Jayasuriya's man, let us "brace" ourselves for results "far" from satisfactory in future when it comes to cricket.

What is wrong with with Sri Lankan coaches? Do our crickters listen only to SUDDHAS? why not give a chance to Marvan, Chandika, Roy, Pubudu to coach Sri Lanka National Team.

sanjaya dias Saturday, 07 December 2013 08:37 AM

Marvin is ok after 2015. Because his time players are still in team and it would be trouble to do better coaching. I think good decision at this stage.

It seems some guys are allergic to Jayasuriya. Sana is doing his best. Sri Cricket Board is bankrupt and can't afford supper coaches at this juncture. I think this is the best available option under the circumstances. After all Farbrace is no stranger to Sri Lankan Cricket. Mavan will remain as assistant coach.

    Fazli Saturday, 07 December 2013 09:17 AM

No I doubt it. Jayasuriya has since changed attitude.

This is a trick to get around David Camerroon

Sana has become the big boss and need yes-men in Sri Lanka cricket. Whatever he says, goes.Very soon he will start selecting his bag boys to the national team.

Suq Madique Saturday, 07 December 2013 01:11 PM

Poor bugger. Does he know what he's getting himself into?

    Alex Sunday, 08 December 2013 12:56 PM

Chams, what do you know about cricket to say that Chandimal should not be in the team. Dude looks like you have never watched a game of international cricket and does not understand SL cricket anyway. Chandimal is the best and most talented young batsman we have at the moment. He might be struggling a bit to score big in one dayers and T20 but he has the quality of a good quality captain and he understands the game well. You cannot expect him to bat like Sanga or captain like Arjuna at his early learning stages of his career. Watch for his improvement very soon. Take Rohit Sharma for example. India's most talented run scorer who was called 'no hit' sharma until this yr he proved his worth. Chandimal will also prove his worth. Talented hardworking players does not take long.

Never heard of him was he the captain of the INGO team last year???

I think there is a lot of "pas" in this selection LOL

    Cobra Saturday, 07 December 2013 01:22 PM

    Kohomahari sudda loku una ne!!!

    NM Saturday, 07 December 2013 04:40 AM

Last nail. Jayasuria is trying to bring a guy who will dance according to his tune. God saves Sri lanka Cricket.

    Anura Saturday, 07 December 2013 05:12 AM

Can he motivate and prepare Sri Lanka to win the next World Cup?

    K.V.Wajira Hemantha Saturday, 07 December 2013 05:17 AM

Marvan is obviously better Far better than FAR Brace....

    chams Saturday, 07 December 2013 01:56 PM

Jayasuriya's plan to kill Sri Lanka cricket is obvious!

First Chandimal as T20 captain and Vice captain of ODI and Test team who in my opinion he should not even in the side let being captain and vice captain.
    Then Ramith in T20 side.
    Now Farbrace...

What has chief selector got to do in selecting a coach? SLC has to define the roles of their hierarchy first before anything else!
    This is now getting ridiculous!

    janaka Saturday, 07 December 2013 05:19 AM

Bring back Dav Whatmore i am sure this will be a good move. Do not give for Jayasuriya's suggestion. We are getting back to our worst position since he took over as chief selector. He can very well judge after the Tour Pak Vs SL in UAE. I am sure we are going to loose all the matches in UAE .

    ANTON Saturday, 07 December 2013 06:13 AM

WE WIN SOME, LOSE SOME AND SPOIL SOME.

    ANTON Saturday, 07 December 2013 06:19 AM

THE BEST COACH OF CRICKET IS PLAYERS MISTAKES.

    crackers Saturday, 07 December 2013 06:19 AM

yeah, the corrupt politician has spoken once more.watmore would have been a real good buy.
