The European Union (EU) today said that it is ‘closely following the situation in Sri Lanka’ after the arrest of the opposition Presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka. The EU called for concrete efforts to overcome the divisions of the past and moves towards genuine reconciliation

“We call on the Sri Lankan authorities to ensure that the rule of law and the safety and security of candidates and campaign workers are ensured,” Spokesperson of the High Representative / Vice President of the EU Catherine Ashton said in a statement.

“We urge the Government and all communities in Sri Lanka to make concrete efforts to overcome the divisions of the past and to move on to genuine reconciliation, without which there can be no return to long-term security or prosperity,” the statement added.

"make concrete efforts to overcome the divisions of the past and to move on to genuine reconciliation" shaa...well said EU.. does the same apply to the war time allegations as well??

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:08 AM

EU kindly intervene before we become like Mynamar or Iran. Get the Rajapakses out of this country

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:12 AM

YOU LOOKAFTER YOUR OWN DIRT. DONT PLAY DOUBLE GAMES. GOVERENMENT WILL PROVE THOSE ALLEGATIONS BEFORE TEH COURT. WAIT AND SEE.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:13 AM

Government and all community in Sri Lanka should consider the concern of the EU. If government continuously neglect the request of the EU will give negative impact on our future generation.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:20 AM

    DONT WORRY

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:21 AM

EU as usual will sit there in their comfort and talk about this like they did during the war time.
We all know its a long way for peace in Sri Lanka. It will be miracle if we see SF being released. If the government has their way, they want to shut him up before he open his mouth about war crimes AND this will suit everyone including the EU because they still need the cheap knickers from Sri Lanka to make huge profit..So don't rely on EU or the UN for SF's freedom.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:23 AM

None of this would have happened if the correct election results were released without it being manipulated.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:27 AM

    very true

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:33 AM

Move towards genuine reconciliation???????? Ha ha ha, what a joke!!! A distance dream for Sri Lankans!

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:36 AM

    Yeah,..
Finally EU concern over its agent in politics.
You have one practical option. Re appoint Ranil as SF's politics are already vanishing..

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:07 PM

Only the educated and intelligent will appreciate and understand such messages. Citizens of this new Sri Lanka consist of sychophants, hoodwinkers, free loaders and bogus patriots.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:18 PM

NO WONDER THE EU DEPRIVED GSP+ FOR THIS LAWLESS COUNTRY.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:24 PM

    yes 100% true

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:07 AM

Its time you get involved in pressurising the GOSL to bring in some kind of justice in SL.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:30 PM

Yes, Spark. You are spot on. Well said.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:50 PM

Why as a country SL is where it is now is because we as a nation have failed to protect our true heroes such as Gen SF.... But supporting psychopaths, thugs, hoodwinkers, free loaders and bogus patriots.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:52 PM

They Like It! Our Leader DO IT. They show they dont like it. Tamil Diaspora Like it.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:57 PM

Since they are funding our country in various ways i.e. projects, programmes, etc., etc., I personally think they also have even an iota of a right to say this... and to see that their tax payers money is been well spent in our country. Besides what is the harm in promoting peace and prosperity and put aside all differences and work only for the country?

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:15 PM

Could not have said better. Still there are few who have some paper qualifications but no brains. I wonder they too must having similar doctorates as famous two Illicit Doctors

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:46 PM

reconciliation should initiate by the govenrnent only. acceptable reconciliation not by threat. U can speak fron EU but no action. MR was a good manbefore came into power. like Premadasa and Candirika. but after got power all are spoiled. Power greedy and theaft to fill their Buckets.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 02:09 PM

These E.U countries are the people who created the divisions in this country. For nearly 300 years they destroyed the Sinhala / Tami cultures when they invaded Srilanka.l They have no moral right to talk about this country since they were like parasites who robbed the wealth of our country and left us with the muck when they left. Today we are compelled to eat the dirt and fight for survival. Please do no interfere any more in our internal affairs to destabilize this nation and suck the balance resources of this country..

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 02:20 PM

EU mind your own business close to GPS +.

Northern Ireland agreements not fulfilled by Brittain on devolution .......
Go mediate between Sinn fein and DPU.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 02:48 PM

You seems to be describing your self..

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 02:49 PM

    Excellent comment.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:31 PM

This is purely an internal affair of Sri Lanka, where the due process of an identified law of the country has been set in motion. Why should the EU have reason to be concerned about it and proceed to tender unsolilcited counsel?

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:33 AM

Before the court trial how Mr. Gotabayasays that Mr. Fonseka will be jailed for 5 years. It is clearly government takes political revenge.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:24 AM

    We need action.. Not statements.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:25 AM

Whats the point EU... These guys will never care about your concerns... So just go ahead and take some form of action before it is too late... We Sri Lankans are helpless now...

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:28 AM

we are very thankful to you, if this consern is solely for the interest of mother Sri lanka.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:29 AM

Hell With EU... Y Dont you look in to the Internal matters of Israel and USA

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:30 AM

    GSP Plus

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:30 AM

    UN and EU:

We don't need lectures so mind your business.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:31 AM

Arrogant tactics create problems for SL and also for those who are in power. These tactics or jilmarts will not long last.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:31 AM

Before you talk of your concerns you need to finalise the issue of GSP+. We know there are under currents wanting you to get involved. This matter with SF is an internal affair unlike UK going into war in Iraq where EU never said a word about the 600,000 Iraqis who died when there were no WMD's. This is hypocrisy!
If SF has done wrong it is left to the law to take its course.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:31 AM

Oh ya! They must be wondering what happened to their investment.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:32 AM

You can tell anything ....... I dont care ...... This is how i will rule this country and the people has given me 58% votes .... So i know people also like to live like this ........ LONG LIVE SRI LANKA

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:32 AM

EU now you stoped GSP what else can you do? mind your business and help haiti fellows not to starve.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:32 AM

The law and order situation should deteriorate- that is what you people may expect. Pinching the baby and rocking the cradle too!

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:21 AM

SL -govt stop damaging the SL image, manage your anger in some other way.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:33 AM

European Union what they should understand General Sarath Fonseka may killed any minute by this dictators.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:34 AM

CONCERN only won't do any good. Take severe action against ruthless rulers who spread lies about the opposition and milead the masses

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:34 AM

    As usual !!

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:37 AM

Mind your own business EU!!! We are not in Europe and EU doesn't have any mandate to involved with internal affairs of a sovereign country. You have lot of social and economical problems inside Europe, please try to solve those without threatening to small countries.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:37 AM

Seems like EU doesn't have anything else to do..... closely follow our situation mates, yes....until cows come home......

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:40 AM

Ranil & Co pressures the local EU wallah in Colombo and EU will issue any news release.SF is arrested, our opposition runs to India. For anything our opposition runs abroad.
Would it not be easier for Ranil & Co to base themselves abroad?

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:41 AM

"Ensure the rule of law and the safety and security of candidates and campaign workers": Asking for feathers from tortoises knowing very well the current attitude of the government towards rule of law and democracy. High time EU realises that we are now a Banana Republic.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:45 AM

We dont need EU,USA.. can trade petriotism which is very cheap in the country

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:55 AM

Starting like this.... by the end they too will be in MR's pocket.

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:01 AM

Starting like this... but at the end, they too are in "Gorilla's " pocket?

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:02 AM

It is astounding that in this country, a Hero is being treated like this. More astounding is that the Public who voted for the General are silent spectators!!! What is the Opposition doing?
