Hitting back at critics, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said the snap elections called for three provincial councils next month would silence them

Addressing the voters of the North, Central and South-western provinces on Friday night through the electronic media, Rajapaksa said that his government had faced unjust international criticism for ending a three decade old separatist armed conflict.

He said local and international critics point accusations at his government for human rights abuses to embarrass him and the voters of the three provinces have been given the opportunity to answer them.

The President said he would not allow communalism to raise its head and would treat all three ethnic groups in the island with fairness.

Sri Lanka has faced international stricture for alleged rights abuses, most prominent was the UN human rights council resolution in March moved by US and backed by India.(PTI)

    perumal Tuesday, 28 August 2012 05:10 AM

Of course, the President can announce the results right now but he doesn't do it for critics will find fault with him, unreasonably.

Jagath Leanagej Sunday, 26 August 2012 02:14 AM

Yes. How can defeat you with all your "Gilmaarts". Dont worry, your brothers will look after you.

This government has specialised in "silencing" its critics

    Sim Saturday, 25 August 2012 09:37 PM

If the President can treat all as Srilankans then it's fine.

    Ranjith Saturday, 25 August 2012 09:56 PM

Only if international critics know how the gullible voters can be fooled by 'Racist element', 'Patriotism', 'Religious factor' and 'Computer jilmart'

Mona Rata Saturday, 25 August 2012 11:17 PM

Yes, we all will be silenced and Gobsmacked for sure...MR knows that..Because, as usual, guess even the results are already known prior to Polling...all done and fixed and ready for the table..MR, you must be really thinking that the entire nation is made up of utter fools(like the Govt) and you can harp aboout the end of the war and then get way with all the corrupt and manupulative governance..Sorry Mr President...we are all way ahead of your shallow but crafty ways,,,It will soon catch up on you..D Day ...

Shehan Jayawardene Saturday, 25 August 2012 11:57 PM

As long as the elections are free and fair and not 'Jilmart' elections, we do not mind how many 'snap elections' the president keeps in the future because then, whatever the results are we will know that it was the people who voted and not just a single computer operator.

    Sunimal Saturday, 25 August 2012 06:28 PM

Manipulated elections- to put across a crooked point!

    Kautilya Sunday, 26 August 2012 02:31 AM

What for the telling. War victory and Jathi Alaya are your only salvation.Although you says you will not allow communal-ism to raise it head, you are the biggest communal and religious extremist behaving like a self appointed tribal leader. If you are true to your word , stop what Merwyn going to do in Annual Kali Kovil ceremony.in Chilaw. we all know the election results what is going to be.But I challenge you to have Northern Province election early as possible without giving lame excuses.

    weha Sunday, 26 August 2012 02:15 AM

There is nothing to silence. anyone can see that those guys haven't done anything for the people else they don't have to be this desperate to get the votes right. every time you people win it is us who loose.

Lal Surain Sunday, 26 August 2012 05:33 AM

Mr Presedent can you please answer why are you conducting election earlier than the secudule date. by doing that why are you wasting public money. you spent 600 million for 3 pc polls if that is in once in 6 years by making it shorter by 1 year you made a loss for the economy 100 million just for 3 pcs. is this the way you as the president of the country waste public money

    DXB Sunday, 26 August 2012 05:36 AM

If we need to develop this country , we should go away from democratic system . This system will create looters every five years.
For example that every one knows that 3 whealers are the real polluters of the road , need to be baned but goverment does not do so to proctect the vote base .

    saradiyal Sunday, 26 August 2012 06:07 AM

The critics have been already silinced by disappearance, intimidation and threats. The elections in SL are name sake once, results have been decided even before the election. People will be on the road soon, you can enjoy till then.

Minnal Sri Sunday, 26 August 2012 10:27 AM

Yes President, I agree with you. Nobody can win any election as long as you are in power.

Just Another Citizen Sunday, 26 August 2012 10:34 AM

The results are all known even before the elections were even thought of.
