The Private Transport Minister told Parliament yesterday that steps would be taken to cancel the driving licences of those who drive with one hand on the steering.

Minister C. B. Ratnayake said driving with one hand on the steering was an offence under motor traffic laws, but a large number of drivers violated this law, as most of them use mobile phones while driving. Mr. Ratnayake said the police have been advised to strictly enforce these laws.

He said the same would apply to those who ride motor bikes without their helmets. “Some wear helmets only when they ride past a policeman," he said.(Yohan Perera)

Minister, I'm from your area. your bus drivers are the worst on kandy-padiyapelella-nuwara eliya route. They drive like idiots. Try to make their dicipline first before giving wedi bana to others.

Then get rid of the traffic. You have to change the gear so many times that you have to keep one hand on the gear and the other on the steering wheel and as if there aren't bigger issues than this. Jobless people....

    Maggie Sunday, 15 December 2013 10:17 AM

    Good question.

Who is going to change gear in manual cars? At least say that driving and chatting on the mobile phone is prohibited.

Dying to see Traffic Police taking action against drivers of Land Rover Defenders who always drive with one hand while the other hand is outside the vehicle waving at other drivers to give way. Rule is a rule and should apply to all.

Two hands were needed before the introduction of power steering. Laws need to be re-written to keep up with the times, pity some people have not kept up with the times

    Malli Saturday, 14 December 2013 03:19 PM

Raj, still it has not become a law for the politicians!

    el Saturday, 14 December 2013 02:06 PM

Private transport minister has no jurisdiction over the department of motor traffic or the police. He can only enforce this in private buses.

Also private transport minister hasnt heard of manual transmission cars!

    Ami Saturday, 14 December 2013 01:44 PM

Non-sense at it's best ! In other terms, your both hands should be glued to the steering at all times and it should be satisfactory to the cops on the way side ! I'd rather walk or take public transport , if this is passed !

    raj Saturday, 14 December 2013 06:37 AM

How about politicians driving on the wrong side? Why not make that legal for politicians

    Yuri Saturday, 14 December 2013 03:12 AM

What would be situation when you change hear ? will they provide another hand?

    Goofy Saturday, 14 December 2013 03:08 AM

This is common sense and is already the law. The problem in Sri Lanka today is know one seems to know the law. Well in a country with no rule of the law it makes no sense to to be knowledgable of the laws.

    ANTON Saturday, 14 December 2013 03:06 AM

HEY, WHAT THE HECK THEY HAVE BEEN DOING WITH THE OTHER HAND ???
