Having an ambulance, trained paramedic/doctor and defibrillator on standby is a solution to sudden-cardiac deaths which are often the cause of such deaths. However, can each and every race afford to have these facilities? Maybe time to consider..

No - if the runner wants to cool off they should use the water themselves, a small amount of water is not going to lead to multiple organ failure! Keep hydrated while running. It is very, very sad to hear of a runner loosing is life.

This is a very tragic incident which could have been prevented by subjecting every participant of the race to a thorough exercise tolerance test prior to participating in the race.
