The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) today said a letter of demand would be sent to Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka for allegedly making defamatory comments alleging a connection between the island-wide strike launched last week by the GMOA and some other professional groups with the Avant Garde issue.

During an event held recently, Minister Ranawaka said the government should investigate whether there was a connection between the island-wide strike and the Avant Garde issue.

He suggested that the government probed whether there was an attempt to embarrass Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne for commenting on the Avant Garde issue.

GMOA Secretary Dr. Nalinda Herath said they would send letter of demand to Minister Ranawaka for allegedly making defamatory comments regarding collusion between the GMOA and Avant Garde backers.

“He used to work together with us when he was serving as the Power and Energy Minister during the previous government. We are disappointed regarding the allegations of Minister Ranawaka who is also a professional engineer. We should stress that no one can buy off the GMOA for their political agendas. If we are chasing after money and other benefits, we would not even be in the country by now since we have got many opportunities to go abroad to lead luxurious lives while engaging in our profession there. Nevertheless, we do love our country Sri Lanka and that is why we are trying to work for the country despite this kind of defamation,” he said.

He added that though the government sector professionals had received proposals from various politicians to halt their struggle, they never did so and would not.

He also alleged that they have been informed by reliable sources about a group of 25 persons who had allegedly been arranged by some opponents of GMOA to create Facebook posts and pages defaming government sector professionals. (Piyumi Fonseka)

These days these so called doctors are a shame to this wonderful profession, these fellows have only one motive , get everything free at the expense of tax payers, unethical fellows in a very ethical profession so sad .They get free education ,duty free permits and want to treat them like God while they act like Devils , sure still there are some lovely docs who are kind and Human concerned but majority are shameless self centered self glorified morons.

Working in other countries you might get a luxury or two but you have to work really hard and no domestic help like here. There you are just one of many. Other countries are not paradise and even though you get more, you also spend more. Only after you retire their pension is good if you come back here. But your life is gone by then.

    Mandy Tuesday, 08 December 2015 11:29 AM

If you are working for the country how can you hold your very poor countrymen to ransom by strikes. How can you ask for permits when 75 percent of your countrymen do not have cars. Hypocrisy at highest level.

WE DID A MISTAKE , WHEN THE DOCTORS STAGED A STRIKE , THE GOVT SHOULD HAVE GIVEN ONLY ONE HOUR FOR THEM TO GET BACK TO WORK , FAILING TO DO SO , CANCEL THEIR LICENSE , EVEN PROHIBITING PRIVATE PRACTICE , THEN BARRED FROM GOING OUT OF COUNTRY , IMPOUND ALL PASS PORTS. THEN WHAT THEY DO. THESE ANIMALS GOT FREE EDUCATION WORTH ONE CRORE AND MORE THAN THIS . STILL THEY DEMAND

    Lima Tuesday, 08 December 2015 11:30 AM

IF YOU DO SUCH THINGS IN TAKING ACTIONS IN THIS MANNER . THEN THEIR EYES WILL OPEN. EVERY DOCTOR HAS MORE THAN ONE VEHICLE , YET THEY DEMAND VEHICLE . FOR EACH PRIVATE PRACTICE THEY CHARTE RS.2000 AS CONSULTATION FEES. THEN COMMISSION FROM PHARMACY , THEN COMMISSION FROM TESTING LABORATORIES. THEN COMMISSION FROM SCANNING LABS , ETC

I always thought the GMOA was an apolitical organization. Their standards have fallen a lot with these new office bearers, who seem to be holding the country to ransom.

    pradeep Tuesday, 08 December 2015 09:12 AM

Plz pay back the money spent by public to educate you and go. I am quite sure you will not get anywhere in the world the same dignity and respect we have for a doctor. Not like other countries our people rarely go to courts for the many negligence by the doctors.

    iSilva Tuesday, 08 December 2015 12:00 AM

"Going abroad and leading luxurious lives". This is a joke. In many western countries doctors have to have professional countries. There you do not find doctors removing the wrong breast or amputating the leg of the wrong patients. Most of the professionals in Sri Lanka have no ethics or morals, and doctors are the worst. They hardly come to the hospitals but practice under each and every coconut tree. Earn in millions and yet bargain for duty-free vehicles. You may be happy in this world but you will get the treatment in the hands of the yama raju.

Free health facility is very important and critical to poor patients. Therefore, New Legal Policy process/mechanism should create to stop strikes in Govt.Hospitals Doctors and Nurses immediately and ban these terrorist activities by leaders of these professional unions.

    Ranjitdea6 Tuesday, 08 December 2015 03:58 AM

Do not try to intimidate the minister, I bet you cannot find a job in another country because your degree is not recognised in most countries

    Dee Tuesday, 08 December 2015 10:39 AM

Will you keep quiet please. Will give a permit.
