Debate over Saddam Hussain Gramam in East

A controversy is brewing in the Eastern Province following the fall of the Saddam Hussain regime in Iraq, over the move by certain quarters to change the name of the village hitherto called Saaddam Hussain Gramam in Eravur.The Eravurpattu Pradeshiya Sabha had passed a resolution to amend the name as Iraq Gramam and a new sign board to the effect was also put up in September.
However, the same Pradeshiya Sabha adopted another resolution last week saying the name “Saddam Hussain Gramam” would not be changed and that the Eravur Divisional Secretary had been informed of the decision.The Pradeshiya Sabha authorities said the previous name change was reversed at the request of the people in the village and a decision by the board of Ministers of the Eastern Provincial Council.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Basher Segudawood who is also the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress said the village will be called Iraq Gramam, irrespective of whatever resolutions have been passed by any higher body. (Rifthi Ali)

Dont change the name, if you change it, the gov will use this incident as an great excuse to change the street name as they wish. Finaly blame will come to you.

naah.. just the usual freedom of speech. You must know by now that SL is the preeminent country in the world when it comes when it comes to free speech, so we name our villages whatever we want.

Why change the name? Just change it to Sinhala. Sadam Hussein Gama. No offence to anyone. Everyone has a good and bad side. Lets appreciate the good he did to us. We are not Iraq. We are not Kuwait either.

As I remember Saddam Hussain has donated money to build up that village. And it will be ungrateful to change the name just because he has been painted a bad image.

I don't agreeing changing the name now, it was done in the first place with great respect to he Saddam Hussein for his generosity at that time, and always that respect should be shown??
