Acting government spokesman, Environment Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said the government for the first time has introduced a mechanism to pay a fair price for fuel by the affluent and a lesser amount by the low income groups.

Addressing a news briefing at the Information department to explain the circumstances that led to Saturday’s fuel price increase, Minister Yapa said the relief packages proposed for the private bus owners, three wheelers, fishermen and school van owners have exempted the poorer sections from paying a higher fuel price.

“In the past the fuel subsidies granted by the government were enjoyed by all despite their income or ability to bear the cost. The price of a litre of diesel was the same for the rich and poor. But with the introduction of the relief packages for those who cater to the poorer sections of society will benefit the public as it will not affect bus fares, school van fares or fish prices,” Minister Yapa stressed.

He added that Sri Lanka still sells fuel comparatively cheap even after the recent price hike. For instance, a litre of petrol in India is Rs. 161, in Singapore Rs. 204, in Japan Rs.227, in Denmark Rs.244, in Australia Rs.177, in Brazil Rs.181, in New Zealand Rs.208 and in Norway Rs.300.  (Sandun A. The last paragraph is a classic half-truth. While mentioning the relatively higher prices of petrol in Singapore, Japan, Denmark, Australia etc., there is no mention of the fact that average incomes in all these countries are at least ten times higher than in Sri Lanka.

The average Australian earns the equivalent of about Rs. 300,000/- per month (many people earn very much more) so what's the problem in buying petrol at Rs. 177/- per litre?

    kaputakukula Tuesday, 14 February 2012 05:29 AM

Minister Yapa, while you compare the prices with a few other nations, DO YOU KNOW the 'per capita' of those countries? Do not mis-lead or try to cheat the people.

    rikas Tuesday, 14 February 2012 05:43 AM

please give the prices of diesel as well of the above countries are they taking us for ride once again.

    perera Tuesday, 14 February 2012 06:17 AM

WHAT AN IDIOT. YOU CAN ONLY COMPARE WITH OTHER COUNTRIES IF THE INCOME POTENTIAL IS IN PAR.
A NORWEIGIAN EARNS MANY MORE TIMES THAN A A LANKAN, CANT THIS FOOL UNDERSTAND THAT.
IF IT IS SO FAIR HOW COME THE GREEDY BUS OPERATORS HAVE INCREASED FARES BY 20%
    WHAT AN IDIOT.

    DonQuixote Tuesday, 14 February 2012 07:04 AM

This is the systematic destruction of the middle class.

    Why ?

Because we will never influence an election. We are too small in numbers and we don't care enough to make an issue about it !

    Seraj Tuesday, 14 February 2012 07:46 AM

What a stupid guy is this Anura Priyadharshana Yapa..?? He is not capable for the position that he holds in the GOSL! Voters...pls wake up..!!!

Kolomba Kaka Tuesday, 14 February 2012 12:32 AM

WHO WILL PAY US THE 20% HIKE ON BUS FARES?

    lankan Tuesday, 14 February 2012 01:05 AM

Income of a Singaporean is 5 times higher than of a lankan , income of a Japanese is 7 times higher than of a lankan, income of a Denmark guy is is 5 times higher than of a lankan, income of a Australian is 10 times higher than of a lankan, in income of a Norwegian is 7 times higher than of a lankan.

They ca afford it but we can't .Got it Minister?

    Anuruddha Tuesday, 14 February 2012 01:10 AM

Can you please keep your mouth shut if you can't make a professional statement. People in other countries DO NOT earn their salaries in LKR and fill the tanks. A person with half a brain can understand that you can't simply make a direct conversion and say it's "cheaper" over here.

Excerpt from this article "will benefit the public as it will not affect bus fares"... another news goes on to confirm that the fares will be increased by 20% incl. SLTB with effect from midnight today.

So for the love of my country STOP making these statements!!!!!!!

    Lanka Tuesday, 14 February 2012 01:20 AM

Can't compare prices with other countries because they are not paid in rupees ! Poor is not exempted paying high prices for their Kerosene for daily use.

    bash Tuesday, 14 February 2012 01:33 AM

This guy is really silly fellow, shame to mankind...... so much kadey yanawa, for what??????????

China Pataus Tuesday, 14 February 2012 02:55 AM

This minister thinks people are fools. He is comparing the price of fuel in developed countries. He has forgotten the salaries of the people living in these countries.

Ranmal de Mel Tuesday, 14 February 2012 02:50 AM

We do not live in India. We may we wish that we could live in one of the other rich and affluent countries mentioned by the minister but we do not. What a specious comment !
Increase in Kerosene prices will have a crushing impact on the poor and the lower middle class. no subsidies for the them. Ministers will still enjoy their free travel! .

fuel user Tuesday, 14 February 2012 02:54 AM

Please sirs.. dont compare our fuel prices with those of other nations without stating their salaries...as well.. they say that in Japan the petrol price is Rs 227 and in sri lanka is 149.,..... but please remember that the minimum wage in japan is some Rs 9000 per day when compared to Rs 400 - 600 per day here!

Please Mr Minister, dont make these foolish utterances!

    susa Tuesday, 14 February 2012 03:20 AM

How can we compare SL rates with other countries? its a joke.

    DonQuixote Tuesday, 14 February 2012 03:00 AM

If there was a relief package :

    (a) It would have been announced BEFORE the price hike.

    (b) It would never be allowed by the lending institutions that we borrow from. Fuel subsidies are NOT allowed.

This is just bunkum for the buffaloes !

Game kolla Tuesday, 14 February 2012 03:07 AM

Don't you know minister...earning power is much more than sri lanka.

    Raj Tuesday, 14 February 2012 03:26 AM

Fuel subsidies for poor, private bus etc from tax payers money. On the other hand the TAX PAYERS always taxed directly & indirectly, They never get any benifit. Its like YOU WORK HARD, PAY TAX GET NOTHING, THE LESS WORKING FORKS GETS ALL

    ButWhatDoIKnow Tuesday, 14 February 2012 03:34 AM

'the poorer sections of society will benefit the public as it will not affect bus fares' - I don't know about you Mr. Minister, but I think an increase of 20% is a pretty BIG "affect" on bus fares!! WAKE UP!!!!!!!

    Shai Tuesday, 14 February 2012 03:54 AM

We dont have any trust on govment.... You all dont have any chinthana, entire system is curupted.

    Sakura Tuesday, 14 February 2012 03:46 AM

Good Joke, What is the per capita income of those countries out minister comparing. In Japan a litter of petrol is 130 yen cheapest and around 190 rupees

    Ariya Tuesday, 14 February 2012 04:06 AM

Nuts, minister, nuts! You guys don't have a clue how to run a country in peace times!

    FAZIL Tuesday, 14 February 2012 03:48 AM

OK DEAR MINISTER, WHAT IS THE AVERAGE INCOME PER PERSON IN THOSE COUNTRIES ??? ARE THE POLITICIANS IN THAT COUNTRY ENJOY THE SAME BENEFITS WHAT YOU ENJOY ??

    mario Tuesday, 14 February 2012 04:47 AM

Who is he trying to kid? I just paid Rs.30 from Katubadda to Kollupitiya, when only yesterday the fair was Rs.22. This guy is talking through his hat!!

    DN Tuesday, 14 February 2012 04:52 AM

It is worth to list average person's salaries also to comparative purpose. If possible benefits of MPs. Also the amount money poor citizens has to spend the maintain luxury lifestyles of MPs and their families

    SW Tuesday, 14 February 2012 05:30 AM

What the cabinet spokesman has forgotten to mention is how much higher the per capita income in the listed countries are compared to us. Of course they can afford to pay those prices for fuel!

    Agrabodhi Tuesday, 14 February 2012 05:20 AM

You have been proved wrong Mr Minister. Your Government has already agreed for a bus fare hike of 20%. And like a child in the kindergarten, you compare fuel prices in affluent countries like Singapore, Japan, Norway, etc. Surely you know that the per capita income level of those countries and salaries are comparatively much higher. The truth is your Government is like a cat on a hot tin roof!

    bandara Tuesday, 14 February 2012 05:23 AM

If the government has charged more to the affluent then 1st in line should be the Ministers . All these people come forward to serve the people and end of the day serve them selves. If prices go up when the world market prices rise thenwhy should you need a goverment ? Like the JVP said some time back.
The main reason for all these increaces are not because of world prices soaring but due to the colosal waist of the government mechinery.

    Time for people to think.
