Daham Pasalas (Sunday schools) in Buddhist temples in the Kalutara District are to be shut down as a protest against the failure by the authorities to close down a tavern that was functioning near a Daham Pasala in Panadura.
A member of the United Bhikku Front, Ven. Kotugoda Jothirathana Thera told a news conference today that they would be forced to shut down the Daham Pasalas if the tavern was not closed down at least within a month.
The Ven. Thera said the responsible leaders of the government had continuously turned a deaf ear for the repeated pleas made by the Bhikkus to remove the tavern immediately.
He said the top brass of the UNP had also treated the issue in the same way when they were briefed about the situation. (Yohan Perera)

Buddhism is not about closing everything that is wrong. It is a discipline that requires not participating or partaking in what is wrong. If the parents of the children attending those Daham Pasalas do not drink alchohol and purchase alchohol from this outlet as an exemplary behaviour and discipline, the outlet itself will have to close down. This is simple buddhism and not what this Thera is obnoxiously using buddhsim for his whims and fancies.
