The Commonwealth said it preferred to make a practical difference in Sri Lanka as opposed to criticising lack of progress in the implementation of the Lessons Learnt Reconciliation (LLRC) report from ‘afar

In a letter titled, ‘wait before you judge Sri Lanka, the Commonwealth Secretary GeneralKamalesh Sharma said the LLRC report is a homegrown roadmap for achieving peace in a multi- ethnic nation.

Following is the full text of the letter published in the Media.

Sir, Sri Lanka still has much to do to implement its post-conflict Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission report (“A Sri Lanka summit discredits the Commonwealth“, Gideon Rachman, June 25). This is a homegrown roadmap for achieving a multi-ethnic nation at peace with itself. The question for the international community is whether to criticise lack of progress from afar in implementing that report or to offer and to make a practical difference. The Commonwealth has opted for the latter, and the Sri Lankan government even now is identifying the areas where we will help. We are active in Sri Lanka in advancing Commonwealth values, including human rights, the media, judiciary, and building mutual respect and understanding in communities.

Our Commonwealth soft power and behind the scenes contributions can often be at risk of negative judgment in the short term, but our success is invariably measured positively in the longer term in the form of real progress. To walk away and not to stay the course would be to the Commonwealth’s lasting discredit.

If Commonwealth does not have the meeting in SL there will be a massive split in Commonwelath nations and it will be responsible for its own actions but then it will be too late.Sri lanka is a peaceful place after eliminating the tamil tigers and have held may international events without any problem. President leads from the front and there are committees and behid the scene staff collectively make it a success including security, hotels, transport, food, airlines,Sri Lankan hospitality thats people like you.So enjoy including the negative minded sri lankans who will never see a commonwealth in your entire life so dont be a looser and country need to move forward inmeterial who is the leader, political party, race, religion or who you are its all about Sri Lanka and Sri Lankans show casing to the world the spirit of sri lanka.

Hey! Sharma. Did the king promise a kickback for you too!

India has consistently demonstrated a huge lack of anything resembling morality or principle in its conduct and this man is yet another example of their contribution to the "international civil service," mumbling total and absolute inanities like his zombie PM.

    Manel Saturday, 29 June 2013 01:40 AM

That was stopped thanks to military tactics of Gen. FONSEKA.

Maha Rajaneni Friday, 28 June 2013 10:36 PM

Hey Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma, WHY ONLY IN SRI LANKA?. LOL

    radha Friday, 28 June 2013 07:11 PM

Why talk in parables Mr.Sharma, Spit it out and tell us in detail what steps you and your organization has taken and what have you achieved in the SL affair?

    unchikun Friday, 28 June 2013 08:46 AM

Hey, we Sri Lankans have been waiting and watching at ground zero level. See things getting worse. What was your package?

    Fayad Friday, 28 June 2013 10:04 AM

By when do you wants to make the changes ??

    SAM_SPARROW Friday, 28 June 2013 09:44 AM

practical difference in SL? It will be another waste of time.

    Dinesh Friday, 28 June 2013 09:39 AM

So if its a regime change you are after, leave it for the Slankans to decide once every 5 years as do the other democracies. Get rid of RW first and have a viable opposition rather than barking at the wrong tree.

    Dinesh Friday, 28 June 2013 09:36 AM

You must be one hell of a Sri lankan to forget things so quick...... How can things get any worse than getting your family's limbs blown off into pieces by terror bombs.

    Shehan Friday, 28 June 2013 09:21 AM

Its amazing how these spineless Indians equate doing nothing to using this socalled soft power. They are purely motivated by greed like the former BCCI president. Most of the Indian leaders are senile including their zombie PM manmohan singh.

    Padma Friday, 28 June 2013 09:18 AM

Is it a red alert signal to commonwealth conformance meeting?

Jonathan Rambo Friday, 28 June 2013 08:52 AM

No practical difference in SL is possible under the current rulers of the country .
