A Japanese couple who disappeared Tuesday while staying at a resort hotel in the Maldives may have drowned, the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka said Sunday.
The 37-year-old man and his 29-year-old wife, who were staying in a villa situated over the water in North Male Atoll, were discovered missing when the hotel searched their room after they failed to show up for dinner, according to local reports.
The body of a woman, which appears to have been underwater for several days, was found Sunday morning near the hotel. Investigators were trying to identify the body, believing it may be the wife, police said.
Relatives of the couple are already in the area, the embassy added.
