Concrete pillar collapses on seven-year-old

A seven-year-old school boy was killed when the concrete pillar adjoining the main gate of a school collapsed onto him when he attempted to climb it.

The incident was reported this morning in Tharanagollagama area in Polpithigama. He had already succumbed to his injuries at the time of admission to the Nikawewa Base Hospital.

The victim Vikum Dananjaya Premaratne was a resident of Thalathapitiya area in Moragollagama.

According to the residents of the area the concrete pillar was unsteady prior to the incident. The Polpithigama police are conducting further inquiries into the incident. (Supun Dias and Pushpakumara Jayaratne)

    Something has to happen for things to get done in this country. No one contributed to the boys death. The pricipal, teachers and the working staff of the school are responsible for the loss of this child. If they had noticed this, why didn't they get down to work and fix the concrete post? So sad!!!

    Spare a thought for the parents of this innocent child. They will have to endure this great loss due to some one's negligence. Timely maintenance of state (and private) assets could prevent such incidents.
