If the second person didn't come back to land nobody would know the incident. It is responsibility of the navy to inform the incident to relevant authorities.
Wasantha Thursday, 14 October 2010 08:15 AM
Navy personnel should have been acted with due care. Negligence is the main cause.
DeAmO Thursday, 14 October 2010 08:00 AM
I won't be surprised to hear the Navy completely deny this incident...
lankaman Thursday, 14 October 2010 07:50 AM
was the navy boat also engaged in fishing?
Above the crowd Thursday, 14 October 2010 06:11 AM
Feel really sorry for the missing fisherman, but the other guy must be given an award for swimming 5 miles to the show.
Above the crowd Thursday, 14 October 2010 07:16 AM
You have to stick to your lane, like in Galle Road from Bamba Kollu. When you are sailing in the night.

How come the Navy didn't rescue the fisherman?
Deewaraya Thursday, 14 October 2010 06:55 AM
in short what your saying is the poor fishermen were bullied by the sailors and now two families are weeping the loss of a husband and a father.
Anushka Thursday, 14 October 2010 06:51 AM
That is really something to be concerned about if a navy vessel that is supposed to be defending our shores were unable to detect and avoid a slow moving fishing boat. Are they getting complacent because the war ended?
ranil Thursday, 14 October 2010 06:39 AM
I think it's too early to speculate! Hopefully a proper investigation into the incident will be done to find out what exactly happened.
I have heard of stories of Navy boats speeding past fishing vessels to intimidate them. So you can't rule out the possibility of Navy messing it up here. Fisherfolk are very afraid of navy vessels so it's highly unlikely the fishing boat "rammed" a navy gunboat armed with heavy weaponry and high tech sonar/radar etc
Ane Anichchan Thursday, 14 October 2010 06:21 AM
Apparently one of boats sailing without lights!
Katussa Thursday, 14 October 2010 06:19 AM
Firstly, how come the navy vessel did not see the fishing boat on its radar and perhaps avoided the collision? Secondly, did the surviving fisherman really swim the 5 miles to shore? Of course fishermen are supposed to be expert swimmers,but....
If the Navy did not see the fishing boat in time on radar then it explains the number of vessels lost to LTTE Sea Tigers when they rammed in to them!!!!!!
Deewaraya Thursday, 14 October 2010 06:11 AM
There goes the fisherman's livelihood. A breath test on the sailors would have helped, but now its too late.
