Opposition United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has held talks with the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) on the private member’s motion to be tabled in Parliament by UNP front-liner Wijedasa Rajapakse.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said the motion sought to ban the clergy of all religions from taking part in active politics.
Mr. Attanayake said at Monday’s meeting, the JHU delegation led by Minister Patali Chmipka Ranawaka had requested that the motion be reconsidered and not tabled in Parliament.
However, the UNP delegation led by Mr. Wickremesinghe had told the JHU that the UNP would take a decision on the matter when the Bill is taken up for debate.
Mr. Attanayake said the UNP said members had a right to present a private member’s motion and as such would not stop Mr. Rajapaksa from presenting the motion. (Yohan Perera)

Mr Wijedasa Rajapaksha has right to present a private member’s motion , don't obstruct, most peoples consent given

What to talk with JHU. Cant we see most of the Buddhist clergy don't live as per Buddhist discipline today. How many of them sold their Car permits. How many of them got stained their names for bad behavior. A real theravaada Buddhist priest will never contest election with laymen. rather than advising them. Please Wijedasa go forward. You are a genuine Buddhist. Country needs more like you.

This would be the best ever resolution which will be tabled and confident that all will support regardless of colour of the political party

YES, BETTER NO CLERGY FOR THE PARLIAMENT , AS THE CLERGY WILL LOSE THE RESPECT SITTING WITH CORRUPT POLITICOS , LIERS , ROBBERS , DRUG ADDICTS , SO ON AND SO FORTH , GOOD DECISION FOR NOT SENDING CLERGY TO PARLIAMENT AS THE CLERGIES WILL BE HELD HIGH IF THEY KEEP THEIR STANDARD WITHOUT MIXING WITH THESE TYPES OF UNETHICAL CITIZENS.

Good job not bowing to the JHU. Good to see the UNP showing some spine for a change. I still have serious doubts whether this bill would pass, but I personally don't want to see monks in politics or meddling in any civil matter.

that's correct, clergy should protect the religion, Govt. will protect the people, why JHU so worry...?

Before that need lot of things to parliament. Atleast code & conduct need for a member. Dancing in public show. Playing for national team.

The good clergy would not touch politics with a ten foot barge pole. They are inherently the decent people in our society and can't see why they wish to rub shoulders with the corrupt, liars, wicked, immoral, unprincipled, depraved in our society.
